Disabled vet. ADHD success story — paying it forward to my uniquely wired tribe. Over-50 Disabled Veteran, West Point Graduate, & Inventor Creating Purposeful Products That Restore Independence and Dignity

I'm a West Point graduate, disabled Army veteran, and lifelong problem-solver. Over the years, I've built a career translating challenges into practical solutions—whether in rail, telecom, or l

ending. Each chapter taught me that innovation isn't about disruption for its own sake; it's about purpose, empathy, and endurance. Today, my work focuses on adaptive design and universal innovation—creating tools that empower independence and dignity for people navigating physical limitations, caregiving, or the transitions that come with aging. I lead a small, veteran-powered team of over-50 professionals who share the same philosophy: age and experience aren't liabilities—they're competitive advantages. We've led teams, raised families, and faced our own limitations. That lived experience drives everything we create. My path into adaptive innovation is deeply personal. Years of upper-extremity limitations—and time spent caring for my father—showed me how poorly everyday products serve people who need better tools. That realization led to NULU, an adaptive kitchen knife with reimagined cutting geometry that allows anyone—regardless of strength, dexterity, or mobility—to cut safely and confidently. It's about restoring control, not compromising ability. Alongside NULU, I'm developing new adaptive tools designed with the same principle: solve the neglected problems that affect millions of lives with respect, practicality, and purpose. Every product begins with lived experience and ends with thoughtful design that stands the test of time. I believe innovation should honor the people it serves. I don't move fast and break things—I move smart and build things that last. I am available for keynotes, workshops, and panels on resilience, innovation, and universal design: www.douglasmkatz.com

My son actually brought this NULU review to my attention.

As the inventor, I am maybe a bit biased, but when I see reviews like this it both grounds and motivates me.

If you're still using a traditional linear knife, there is a better option.

At NULU, we talk a lot about grip strength and dexterity, but there are a lot of conditions that also result in tremors. These bring unique challenges, many of which are rooted in safety.

With superior blade control, NULU shines in these situations as well.

Want to know why?

Check out my recent article.

Traditional knives are great for a lot of things. I will always carry one when in the in the woods.

In the kitchen, however, cutting tasks are more common. In fact, I cannot think of a kitchen task that needs a sharp tip. In those tasks, traditional knives often fall short.

NULU fills that need with its unparalleled flexibility.

We are beta testing a tool to help users see how NULU can help with their unique needs. DM me if you would like to give it a try.

We are also looking for beta testers for a reimbursement tool that can help you explore insurance and other options to get your NULU paid for. As above, DM me if interested in trying out the tool.

We originally entered the market with NULU, it was around my own upper extremity issues. The market taught us that there were way more people that we could help.

One area that we were surprised was the vision impaired community. We in fact sold our first knife at the 2025 Abilities Expo Chicago to someone with partial blindness.

What we found was that cutting is not just about force, it is about control and traditional knives lack what most vision impaired users need.

NULU addresses those needs bringing independence to an important community that deserves it.

Versatility in a tool equals adaptability for the user.

Tools should be an extension of the body not something requiring excessive technique.

That is our mission at NULU and, for this happy user, I can say mission accomplished.

Your kitchen should not be a knife fight and with NULU you get harmony with your body.
