Knotty Alder
While technically hardwood, alder is softer and easier to work with than species such as oak or maple, making it an excellent choice for many projects. Once properly dried, it offers excellent stability with minimal movement and takes stain well, often serving as a cost-effective alternative to cherry.
Red alder is the most abundant hardwood in the Pacific Northwest and has become a favorite among woodworks for its versatility, stability, and appearance. It is sorted into clear alder and knotty/premium alder.
Knotty alder is prized for its rustic charm. The natural knots and color variations are exactly what give knotty alder its unique character and appeal. These features make it a popular choice for farmhouse, rustic, and cabin style designs. Common uses for alder include cabinets, interior doors, furniture, and trim.
