The Copper Elm

The Copper Elm A little bit art, a little bit DIY, a little bit everyday life, and a lot about learning how to take up space again. Time to change that. I’m glad you’re here.

Creating a community of women who spent way too much time wearing armor, and not enough time feeling seen. Hi and welcome to The Copper Elm!! I'm Sam, an artist, mom, and fixer of all sorts of things. What started with furniture painting and DIY projects has slowly grown into something softer and more personal...a space for creativity, handwritten connection, colorful homes, slower moments, and be

coming more fully yourself. I hope to be your reminder that beauty, creativity, and community still matter.

I’ve rewired a ton of lights, installed a handful of ceiling lights, motion lights, patio lights, etc. But somehow I still managed to make the most ridiculously stupid mistake possible. Learn from me….leave yourself some extra wire. You can tuck it into the ceiling. Do. Not. Cut. The. Wires. Too. Short. 😭😭😭 And yes I almost spilled tears in Lowe’s today, but I DIDN’T! We’ll take that as a win.

Hey so the artwork is super cute and I’m kinda tired of being worried someone will disagree so moving forward I’m just a mediocre man, mmmkay?

Have I put this off for far too long? Yep. Have I clicked “mark all as read” every time I reach 100,000 emails? Also yep. That does create a little jolt of accomplishment but I’m well aware (thanks to the nonstop notices regarding my storage capacity) that it does not actually solve the problem. So today we start doing just that. And maybe just maybe if we start cleaning up our email accounts, we can clear up enough space to focus on things that matter more than dominos ads.

Did I forget about this airport six months ago? Sure. But am I finishing it now? Well no, probably not. But I DID map out and cut all the boards for four terminals and 2 hangers so I’ve got that going for me. My kid got board half way through and dipped so I had a solid hour of cutting boards while thinking “why the hell am I doing this?” 😆 anyway, come back in a year and I should have this model airport finished.

Surprisingly, the only thing that alerted TSA was the loaf of bread. 😆 I thought it was hard packing for 3 1/2 weeks in a small carryon bag but I made it work. Coming home though was a whole different challenge since he apparently accumulated waaaaay too many random items while he was away. I’m still not really sure how it all fit, but it did. And now we have a new alien that lives in our house. Joy. 😆

I am constantly talking myself out of posting things like this because I’m not at the finish line. I’m barely past the starting line. I’ve spent 42 years being stressed out, disappointed in myself, creating insanely unrealistic expectations, and being uncomfortable in my every day existence. I don’t know what it feels like to relax. And I’m just now realizing that is not ok. So I embarked on this little journey to slowly overhaul my life and step into a softer version of me. Not weaker, not more submissive, not lacking. Just softer. Learning to set the armor down a little more each day and allow myself to just exist without chaos. It still feels crazy foreign which is why I never share these thoughts. Part of my stressful existence is this idea that I can’t speak on something if I’m not all knowing. And do I know everything about living a stress free, confident, calm life? Clearly no. But I do know what it’s like to want it. To crave it. To feel guilt when moving toward it. And maybe that is important to share too. Maybe one day I’ll look back at how silly and naive I was, but for right now this is what things look like. 99% chaos, 1% peace. Working on changing those numbers in a big way.

I just realized I don’t know if I have ever shared a video of the month’s artwork. Little sneak peaks here and there, but not the actually finished product. There’s probably a lot to that and a lot of it would probably lead back to my anxiety of people telling me I suck. 😆 Trying to overcome that and just start showing up instead. Also, I kinda sorta felt proud of June’s artwork. I’ve worked really hard to get better at making the collections more cohesive and meaningful. For June, being Pride month, I felt a pull to focus on bold unapologetic colors. The views are all slightly obscured, but they are seen regardless. Hopefully someone out there can feel seen as well. 🏳️‍🌈💙
