A little piece of Cedarburg history! John P Wirth, a shoemaker, settled in Cedarburg in 1846 and in 1865 he founded what became one of the county’s largest businesses. He built the store in 1871 on Washington Avenue in Cedarburg and sold groceries, general merchandise, farm implements, clothing and was the first merchant in the county to offer ready-made shoes. (Information from a publication by the cedarburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center.) This small oval plate which measures 8.5 inches across was a giveaway from Wirth’s made in the USA by Limoges china company in Sebring Ohio.
