I can’t think of any stronger force for transforming pain into power than art. Visual artist Spandita Malik travels to small communities across India and photographs women survivors of gender-based violence in their homes, inviting them to embroider over their image in the style that is unique to their village or community. In doing so, she brings women out of the shadows and confines of their lives and into the light through her lens, giving them agency over their work, their story and an enduring way to make their mark on the world. Textile art/fashion is so much more than beautiful things, it is beautiful intentions, woven together with every color and texture of the human experience. Coming home can mean so many things. Returning to one’s most essential self and/or the ones, who are in essence, our home. Reveling in a new journey or pausing to find respite from one. Renewal of purpose and passion in a sense of place. For a designer, it is all these things, but also the sanctuary of our imagination and all that is imprinted on our heart coming to life. A treasured room of our own, where meaning and connection lives in every board and beam, where we feel the most whole and are able to be our most authentic selves. Where we have the profound privilege of creating a world of our own design, and dreaming is as central to survival as breathing.

That we have a holiday devoted exclusively to seeing, seeking and shining light is truly the loveliest thing. And that our state has created the space to make that happen is everything. The light in me sees and honors the light in you, this Diwali and always.
