I thought I loved design. Dubai taught me I actually loved culture.

In 2015, I traveled to Dubai and became fascinated by the collision of cultures happening everywhere around me.

The languages. The food. The neighborhoods. The architecture. People from all over the world bringing pieces of home with them, while Dubai remained distinctly Dubai.

But my aha moment happened at a Drake concert. 😂
“Successful” came on and the entire arena started singing. At some point, I stopped singing and just listened. Different accents. Different languages. Different parts of the world. Same desire.

We all wanted to be successful.

And something clicked.

Culture makes us beautifully different without making us disconnected. I think that’s the moment I fell in love with it. I’ve traveled much more of the world since then, but that curiosity has never left me. Eventually, it found its way into my work and became part of the foundation of Muse Noire.

Belonging was always the destination. I just didn’t have the language for it yet. Forever at the intersection of Culture & Interior Wellness.

Dorm room design is having a moment and depending on who you ask, we’ve either taken college move-in to another level or completely lost the plot.

But this room made me think about it differently.

I had the opportunity to serve as a guest designer with Greater Than Expectations, creating a freshman dorm room for a young woman who has experienced foster care and is now stepping into adulthood.

For many of us, our first dorm room was simply our first taste of independence.

For her, I kept thinking about what it means to have one of the first spaces in your adult life that is yours.

A door you can close.
A bed that belongs to you.
Your things, arranged the way you want them.
An environment that reflects who you are becoming.

Suddenly, choosing the bedding, organizing the desk and hanging something beautiful on the wall didn’t feel frivolous at all.

It felt like belonging.

Because design isn’t always about luxury. Sometimes it’s about creating the backdrop for someone to begin imagining what’s possible next.

College will give her new classes, new friendships, new responsibilities and an entirely new community.

My small contribution was making sure the environment waiting for her said: you belong here.

And that’s a room worth designing.

Man listen… when Muse Noire becomes what we will become, just know I had some help along the way…

Mid figure it out I got the call to say after the extensive application, panel of interviews, and a deep financial review we’d like to offer you a spot in Goldman Sachs 10K Small Business program for cohort 35

To say the least I was overwhelmed before, during and after the call to be honest. When I applied I just knew it was the catalyst I needed. I can’t tell you how I knew, I just did. They were giving me so much information over the phone and I was literally just trying to hold it together. Because I knew! I knew this was the start of an answered prayer.

See I had made a plan for the year and again to say the least it was not working. And once I realized it wasn’t working I considered pulling away from my target demographic of clients and that to be honest made me incredibly sad. Why?

I built this for us. I can’t turn my back on us when the going gets tough! More on that later though!

To my growth advisor 🥹 and powerhouse believer. Thank you for seeing me. Thank you for the direction, the push and the silent yet solid presence you possess. You show up consistently on brand for all that you stand for and beyond the business coaching I need you to know that I had my fingers crossed behind my back since orientation hoping we’d get to connect.

The time and energy you poured into me will not go to waste. I feel every bit of responsible for your belief in me. You’re kinda stuck with me and I hope that’s okay.

A lot of you mentioned going through this program through other cities, through different faculty. Respectfully. You can’t convince me that there’s a more qualified group of faculty and advisors than the one in a Dallas.

Put your mask on first, back to school edition:
Before I ask my daughter to clean her room, I clean mine. It’s one of my favorite parenting hacks. Not because I’m trying to be perfect, but because kids often do what we do long before they do what we say.

As we head into back-to-school season, we’re busy preparing everyone else. But who’s preparing the environment that restores you?

We spend so much time creating spaces where everyone else can thrive that we forget we deserve one too.

We recently had the pleasure of redefining an environment for a mother and all I could think was yeah they think we’re just transforming the space, but deep down I knew we were creating a sanctuary for the woman holding everything together for the legend before her and the legacy coming up behind her. ( multi-generational household )

The airplane safety speech says to put your mask on first, and I happen to think our homes should help us do exactly that.

For 80 years, the Polar Bears of Martha’s Vineyard have reminded us that belonging is something we create together.
What began as a morning swim became a tradition. What became a tradition became a community. And what became a community created a place where generations return

We often talk about how spaces shape the way we live. But sometimes it’s the rituals within those spaces that give them meaning. The laughter before sunrise. The familiar faces. The stories passed from one generation to the next. These moments transform a destination into home.

At Muse Noire, we’re endlessly inspired by communities like this because they remind us that the most meaningful environments are built on connection long before they’re built with materials.
