What does a designer look at when touring an exclusive hotel penthouse in Paris?I can't speak for anyone else but when on the design tour of the penthouse in Cheval Blanc (designed by one of the 21st century's most prominent architects, Peter Marino), I was under the sink in the primary suite trying to figure out how in the world they hid the plumbing!

The good news is I think I figured it out! The bad news is no photography is allowed on the tour due to the valuable artwork inside so I can’t show you anything–not even the plumbing–from the actual penthouse. But this video is are actually views from the penthouse looking outside. Still amazing, oui?!

“To see takes time.”When I first saw this quote as the title of the now-closed Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit at MoMA in NYC, it gave me pause.

The exhibit (which was fabulous, by the way) featured many of her early works, including charcoal, pencil, and watercolor works on paper, showing the evolution of her art.

As a designer, her quote resonated with me. It’s hard to express but there are so many layers and levels to design. Paint, fabrics, and furnishings are crucial but they’re also just scratching the surface.

Now nearly two decades into my design career, I’ve had to handle thousands and thousands of design details I’d never even noticed in homes when I first started as a designer. It’s taken years to see–and to know how best to handle–that level of detail.

Today, my clients benefit from all of that time behind me. It informs my innovation and my creative vision and allows me to give them spaces designed with a deeper level of detail and quality. There’s just no substitute for it!

PS -- This piece from 1916 is one of my favorites. Do you recognize the subject? You will when you read the title -- "Tent Door at Night."

Oh my heart, this was the sweetest project for the most adorable little girls, y’all! When our client asked us to help create a nursery for her baby girl on the way and at the same time, give big sister’s room a refresh, we were over the moon! 🌙

This client lives in the Castlewood section of Atlanta, but grew up in south Georga, about 30 minutes from where I did. Not only do we both speak Southern but she’s never met a hairbow or a monogram she didn’t love, so I knew we’d get along just fine! 🎀

For the nursery, we reused some of big sister’s pieces. We custom-framed special artwork made by the client’s grandmother to hang over the crib and added a lovely Schumacher wallcovering. The jute rug feels soft to the touch but the color and texture help cut the sweetness of the space.

For both girls, we had window seats built into the dormers in their rooms so they’ll both be able to play, read, and daydream in their very own cozy spots. 📖🧸

The girls (and their rooms!) couldn’t be more adorable!

*SNEAK PEEK* Our fabulous clients were THRILLED to have us working together with their builder right from the start of their project. From the marble and wood floor we custom designed for the foyer to the beautiful brick we added to the kitchen and dining room ceiling and everything in between, we ensured the design of their new construction custom home was ideally tailored to them and how they live.

It’s such a privilege for our team to help elevate the results our clients get frm their custom home builds, and we always love working with the amazing team at Arcadia!🥰

Light, modern, and welcoming. Those were the keywords for this fun project we did for one of TZI’s favorite repeat clients.

We inherited the gorgeous architecture by and decorated the existing spaces to work for the family’s evolving tastes and busy lifestyle, which includes hosting a bevy of teens at a moment’s notice.

You can see more of the home in the Sept/Oct issue of Southern Home Magazine on stands and online now.

There's truly nothing quite like adding artful, custom details to the envelope of a space to elevate a home's design to the next level. I also love it as an intriguing way to bring in an unexpected layer of personalization and style. These gorgeous doors, the ceiling detail, and the reclaimed wood beam make this entry truly special.
