Lucious Newsom invented his famous BBQ rub in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1987. What has been called "the world's best" barbecue seasoning came into being because a man named Lucious Newsom didn't like having to draw unemployment compensation to get by and was determined to find a way to make some money. he told a newspaper interviewer years ago. And he knew what the answer was - a secret seasoning

- resulting from years of experimentation with old family recipes to make a tangy blend of salt, spices and herbs. A barbecue chef for four decades, Lucious had come upon hard times when a former business associate, thinking he had learned Lucious’ secret recipe told Lucious “to take off, that he didn’t him”. It was while unemployed that Lucious elaborated on his already well-known seasoning to create the formula that today is winning acclaim all over the United States. But getting into business wasn’t easy. He knew of a company in another city that could package the seasoning. But Lucious had no money to get there. So he hitchhiked, catching rides, but having to walk much of the way too. When he finally arrived an hour before closing and explained why he was there, the manager was skeptical. So Lucious promised the man if he would delay closing, he would have some of his barbecue ready for sampling. The meat was purchased and a grill obtained. After tasting it, the manager proclaimed it “fantastic”, and although Lucious had no money, the manager agreed to get the seasoning rady for the market. And the rest is history!

Lucious "The King's" Southern Seasoning Recipes

Lucious Sauce
One of the reasons Lucious "The King's" BBQ Seasoning cooks so well is that, unlike sugar based sauces, it doesn't burn. However, there is always a need for a sauce to coat cooked meat just prior to removing it from the grill or to use for dipping with the meal. Lucious "The King's" BBQ Seasoning makes a great addition to most sauce recipes. One of our favorites is made with ketchup, vinegar and brown sugar. It can be used for both dipping and basting. The recipe is simple.
2 Cups Brown Sugar
1 Cup of Vinegar
1 Cup Ketchup
1 TBSP Worcstershire Sauce
1 TBSP (or to taste) Lucious "The King's" BBQ Seasoning
Garlic, Onion, Hot Sauce and Orange Juice to taste

Mix all ingredients in a sauce pan, simmer until thick.
Stir occasionally.

Lucious Tenderloin
Buy good pork tenderloin
Put plenty of Lucious “The King’s” Barbecue Seasoning on the tenderloin and stick n a few cloves. If you don’t have whole cloves, you might just put a touch of ground clove (really, use just a little by sprinkling over the top of the tenderloin one time).

Put the tenderloin on the grill away from the coals; or put a pan with vinegar, Worcestershire Sauce, Lucious “The King’s” Barbecue Seasoning and apple juice on the coals with the tenderloin on the grill grate above the pan. A deep disposable aluminum pan is ideal. Cook the meat until it is tender and juicy which can be a few hours or an all day affair, depending on the weight of the meat. It’s done when the meat thermometer reaches between 146 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
