This Birdwing species, Troides papuensis, is striking all on its own. But this particular specimen takes it to a whole other level!

Though its bold wasp-like markings are displayed throughout, its left hindwing shows the spots of a female, while the right side boasts the pure goldenrod typical of a male. That's because this butterfly is a gynandromorph: an INCREDIBLY rare organism that is both male AND female! The male and female markings on this particular specimen are split right down the middle 💛🖤
