In keeping with our recent material based themes, our prompt for our monthly photography competition this month was STEEL. Among the many sturdy submissions, we ended up with a tie. The first is an upward view of Seattle Public Library by Rem Koolhaas, giving us an interesting framing and an elegant combination of materials. The second is a moody snap of The Cloud, designed by Studio Fuksas in Rome. Providing a more curvilinear experience than its co-winner, this shot showcases the more playful side of steel. This competition continues to expand our world, whether it’s introducing us to interesting works of architecture and art or simply wowing us with stunning vistas. // 📸: Alex and Donovan S

The Village of Northfield celebrated 100 years since its incorporation this year by looking to the future. Their Vision Plan 2040 set guidelines for making the most of their enviable assets and character. OKW anticipates being part of that evolution with three projects in the works in Northfield. Pictured here is Avere, a thoughtful housing development that capitalizes on growing interest in transitional rental living in the North Shore. It aligns with the Village’s plan by creating a desirable development with a pedestrian-friendly layout that promotes walkability and vitality. //

Late last year we wrapped up construction on Galewood Residences, a housing development on Chicago’s West Side made up of 125 apartments and 25 townhomes. This type of development is in short supply not just in Chicago but in this specific neighborhood. With impressive leasing numbers and wonderful feedback from residents, it has been a success across many fronts. //

Last week we hosted a field trip of the in-progress mixed-use development, One Winnetka. With help from our construction partners at Walsh, our project team gave a handful of fellow OKWers a taste of what the transformational project feels like with walls up. Our material-themed photo competitions continue with BRICK. We all love masonry — the charm, the structural integrity, the detailing — and our staff delivered with beautiful shots of vaulted ceilings, intricate facades, and creative applications. The winner was Rachel’s snap of an adaptive reuse project at Stockholm Royal Seaport. It is a collection of beautiful brick buildings standing next to modern architecture as part of a massive new neighborhood. Even among tough competition, the office crowned it with the most votes. Our renovation of Johnson College Prep in Englewood is a great example of how architecture can make a big impact with very little space. Our team created a three-story entry and steel canopy to replace a beige, uninspiring front door (swipe).
