It wasn’t the bridge that stopped me today.

It was the tree.

The bridge simply happened to be waiting beneath its branches.

Sometimes, all it takes is a different point of view to discover something familiar all over again.

There are entrances in Galena that make me wonder what it must have felt like to arrive here long ago.

This one always does.

The brick pillars, the lions keeping watch, the old iron fence—and that wonderful drive that curves away beneath the trees toward a Federal home built around 1850.

I imagine horses coming through those gates. Visitors catching their first glimpse of the house. Someone standing at a window, watching for an expected arrival.

More than 175 years later, those same details are still here.

And perhaps that’s what I love most about old houses.

You don’t have to imagine everything.

Sometimes, enough remains to let the story begin.
