I've been sewing more than knitting or crocheting lately. I made this from the "Double Zip Gear Bag 2.0" pattern from by Annie dot com. It didn't come out too bad, but I didn't enjoy it. It isn't a bad pattern - just because I didn't enjoy it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. The only thing I question is the 1/4" seam allowances, which I don't feel are enough for a bag like this, given the multiple thick layers
You start by quilting the outer/batting/lining, cut the pieces out, and assemble. The quilted fabric does make a bag that holds its shape nicely, but the seams get bulky and you have to finish them somehow, and limits how pockets can be added. Using the zipper tape as a facing is clever, but I'm not sure I like it. I used lightweight twill tape instead of bias binding, and hand-sewed it. I'm happy I did, the end seams look much better now.
I ended up throwing out the interior mesh pockets that fought me. The zippered mesh pocket I kept was supposed to be on the outside (and taller, oops), but I thought it would make the bag too busy. Other changes I made were relatively minor - cotton webbing for the handle, and magnetic "snaps" instead of velcro. I think I'll probably add the suggested zipper pull connecting the two flap zippers, using grosgrain ribbon or paracord.
I've taken notes on how a YouTuber I like (SewingTimes) did this style bag. I've made several of her designs, so I'm going to try making her version next. I also have several Quarry Totes (project size), made from the Noodlehead sewing pattern, that are almost done. I've just got to finish sewing up the linings where they were left open to turn right-side-out and add drawstrings.
