My name is Susan Sherman, and my work is rooted in the transformation of reclaimed materials and natural elements. I have long been drawn to creating art that gives new life to discarded objects, combining traditional techniques with forms inspired by the natural world.
After retiring, I relocated to a mountain farm in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the landscape and daily rhythms of rural life became central to my artistic practice. It was there that I began creating papier-mâché masks, incorporating naturally shed feathers from peacocks, chickens, turkeys, and guinea fowl raised on the property.
I also work with materials such as tree bark and cholla cactus wood. My hand-painted cholla garden sticks, often adorned with feathers, reflect my interest in blending organic textures with deliberate design, transforming found objects into sculptural pieces.
Through my work, I explore themes of renewal, sustainability, and the enduring beauty of the natural environment.
