A few free parking spots are offered on-site for Rookwood customers. Other parking options include paid spaces at the corner lot located at Race and McMicken. Additionally, you can park along Race Street or in the Findlay Market lot. Please heed all parking meters and tow zones.

The Cincinnati Open trophy isn’t just a symbol of Cincinnati. It’s made here.

Rookwood has been part of Cincinnati Open history since the very beginning.

On September 18, 1899, the first Cincinnati Open began at 9:30am on the “elastic clay and brick dust” courts of the Avondale Athletic Club. Players came from across the country, crowds gathered to watch, and the tournament was billed as a national tournament from the very beginning.

There was no permanent trophy that first year. Instead, champions competed for prizes, including our pottery.

Nat Emerson became the first men’s singles champion, taking home a Rookwood ale set: a tankard and six mugs, purchased for $150 in 1899, nearly $5,900 today. Myrtle McAteer won the women’s singles title and received a Rookwood vase, purchased for $100, nearly $3,900 today.

In all, the tournament spent $700 on prizes that year, nearly $28,000 today, including Rookwood pottery, silver loving cups, racquets, and luggage.

More than a century later, Rookwood returned to the tournament to create its prizes once again. Today, that tradition continues through Rookwood Custom, our bespoke line of commissioned work, where our artists create pieces made specifically for the people, places and moments that matter.

The Rookwood Cup has evolved over the years, but its purpose remains the same: to make something worthy of a Cincinnati champion.
