10 years ago I posted a little Fort Hood sketch wondering if anyone besides my husband and I would like this way of commemorating military life. I don’t think I ever dreamed it would become my job for over a decade.

Sketch & Sentiment provided me an income when I had to leave my career and move to a military base, it was an anchor to my individuality when I was drowning in newborn and toddler mom life, and it continues to connect us to a community that feels like family, regardless of where our military journey has taken us.

Today is more than the unofficial start of summer, cookouts, lake days, and long weekends. I say that not to take anything away from the joy of those things, but to invite something more.

Memorial Day was born from grief. It exists because some people gave everything, completely, and finally, and for you and me.

Despite the busyness of the world around us, I invite you today to take a sacred pause. Consider how you are honoring the legacy of those who sacrificed their entire lives to give us the gift of life.

Let's make it a life worth living, fully and on purpose.

If you grew up as a military kid, you know all too well what it's like to be the new kid, AGAIN, to make a best friend and then move away shortly after, to call 3 different states home before graduating middle school, and to be brave in ways most kids your age never have to be.

Military children don't choose this life, but have to learn how to carry the burden with a grace and resilience that civilians could never understand. These kids grow to become some of the most adaptable, empathetic, and remarkable people I've ever had the privilege of knowing through this community.
