We are honored to have received a Mention Award at the 2025 Cincinnati Design Awards . We would like to thank the jury for highlighting our preservation efforts and finesse of materials.

This project focuses on the concept of industrial retreat. The shell of the structure provided bones that anchored the design. Concrete floors, rough brick walls, and exposed structural steel formed distinctive framework. The rich, organic palette was woven through and around this existing lattice. A two-story corten steel fireplace is the heart of the home, providing both literal and material warmth. The walnut slab, plaster hood, and honed granite counters bring in natural textures at a large scale in the kitchen and dining area.

Designed for entertaining, the living space acts as a central hub. Surrounded by window seating, it provides an inviting spot for conversation. Both the mezzanine library and primary suite adjacent to this central hub, provide private sanctuary with the ability to be connected or secluded from the rest of the home. The entertainment features extend to the roof, where the penthouse creates a quiet refuge of outdoor living.

Over a century ago, a concrete tunnel was constructed underground, intended to house a subway for the City of Cincinnati. Unfortunately, this hidden bit of infrastructure was never fully realized. The tunnel is located beneath Central Parkway, beginning at the intersection of Walnut Street and ending north of the Western Hills Viaduct. Along the 2-mile route, three train stations were built. Our study focuses exclusively on the Race Street Station, the largest of the three, as it offers the largest open space in one of the densest locations in the city.

Kurt and Elizabeth Platte have been part of the Over-the-Rhine community for about 6 years now. At 18 years old, they met at Miami University in Oxford, OH. Kurt was studying architecture and had a project in OTR his freshman year, and with Elizabeth being a Cincinnati native, they always knew their hearts belonged to this community.

Not only do they live in OTR, but they also work within walking distance from their home. Elizabeth is the COO of Crossroad Health Center off Liberty Street and Kurt owns Platte Architecture + Design just a block away from the Market. Some of their work in the area includes Cherbourg Cyprus, residences on Pleasant Street, and the Model Group office. Kurt even intentionally designed his and Elizabeth’s house so that their kitchen faces the Market.

“My favorite part of Findlay Market is the diversity and sense of community,” Elizabeth explains. “Now that we’ve been down here for so long, we know a lot of people. It was such a lifesaver during the pandemic to have had access to fresh food and a great company [like Findlay].”

Kurt says his favorite part of living in the Findlay Market District is connecting with the community. He's in addiction recovery, and still participates in support groups with his church. When he meets folks who may be struggling with substance abuse, he welcomes them to stop by his support group and reminds them that the door is always open.

Elizabeth and Kurt love coming to the Market, especially for the Findlay Market Opening Day Parade. “It is an employee holiday at our office,” says Kurt. During the summertime, you can even find him selling his paintings at our Outdoor Market. He and Elizabeth also love hearing the music during Music at the Market season in the comfort of their own home. Kurt and Elizabeth truly exemplify what it means to be a part of the Findlay Market community, and their support and love for the market doesn’t go unnoticed.
