The whole routine for cleaning a wood table is shorter than people expect. 🧽

A little mild dish soap in warm water. Barely damp cloth. Then dry it off.

That's usually all it needs. You're not feeding the wood — the finish is the protection, and the job is just keeping that clean.

Two things worth skipping:

❌ Ammonia-based sprays — they tend to dull a finish over time. ❌ Aerosol "furniture polish" — most of it is silicone. Glossy for a day, then a cloudy film that's genuinely miserable to get back off.

One thing that does deserve a wipe: anything left sitting overnight — especially near a seam — or something properly harsh like nail polish remover.

Here's one that catches people, and it has nothing to do with your doorway. 📐

To stand a tall bookcase up, you don't just need a ceiling taller than the bookcase. You need room for it to swing.

Tipping a piece upright off the floor rotates it through its diagonal — height and depth together, not just height. An 84" bookcase that's 12" deep sweeps about 85" on the way up.

Eight-foot ceilings give you 96", so usually no trouble. Where it tends to bite:

🔻 A soffit or a dropped section of ceiling 🔻 A low beam 🔻 A ceiling fan over the spot it's going 🔻 Older rooms that sit lower than a new build

Easy to get ahead of if you know: measure the ceiling where the piece is actually going, not the middle of the room. And it's worth asking whether a tall piece ships in sections — many do.

A heads-up from Barewood 🪵

Archbold and Amish Essentials are raising prices about 3–4%, and Whitewood about 3–6%, depending on the piece.

Archbold and Amish Essentials orders placed by Wednesday, October 21, stay at today's price. Whitewood orders have until Friday, October 30.

Archbold is also retiring Coffee, Mineral, and Sand on its alder pieces. If you've been meaning to add to a set in one of those finishes, don't put it off.

They're not big jumps, but we'd rather you hear it from us. Several pieces from all three makers are on the floor right now. Come in and we'll walk you through it.

"Seats eight" usually means eight people can touch the table. Not eight people eating dinner. 🪑

About 24 inches of table edge per person, 30 for elbow room. That's the part everyone knows. Two things decide it that almost nobody mentions:

📐 Width decides whether the ends count. Under about 36 inches wide, the end chair has table in front of it but no depth for a plate, a glass and your hands. At 40 to 42 those seats become real ones. Same length, two more people.

🦵 The base decides where chairs go. Legs at the corners sit exactly where an end diner's knees want to be. A pedestal frees the whole perimeter. Same 72-inch top, often a two-seat difference.

And you don't have one seat count — you have two. A Tuesday number and a Thanksgiving number. An extension table is how one piece covers both.

That cloudy white ring on a wood table? Most people blame the cold drink. It's usually heat. 🔥

A casserole dish out of the oven. A laptop running warm. A curling iron set down for a second. Heat drives moisture into the finish, often in minutes.

Water gets the blame because a glass leaves a ring you can see. But a spill you wipe up is usually a non-event.

🔧 And an existing one is often fixable. White means the moisture is sitting in the finish, not down in the wood. Dry cotton cloth over the mark, warm iron across the top — low, no steam, a few seconds at a time. A hair dryer works too, more slowly.

White marks usually lift. Dark ones mean it reached the wood, and those want a refinisher.

The most common dining table mistake isn't picking the wrong table. It's measuring the wrong thing. 📏

People measure the wall. The number that actually decides it is the floor.

You need about 36 inches between the table edge and the wall just to pull a chair out and sit down. Where someone has to walk behind a seated guest — usually the kitchen side — you want closer to 42 to 48.

Which means the space a table needs is a good deal bigger than the table.

The shortcut: take six feet off each of your room dimensions. That's roughly your biggest workable tabletop. A 10 × 12 room tops out around a 48" × 72". An 11 × 13 gets you to about 60" × 84".

Run those numbers before you fall for something. It's a lot cheaper than finding out after it's delivered. ✅
