Since it's been too cold lately to have us clean your windows, you've probably just been staring at your dirty windows, and wondering if it's true that glass is actually a liquid.

This urban legend got started when it was noticed that old glass has ripples, and is thicker at the bottom than at the top, as if gravity was causing it to "run".

Well, the truth is that glass is an amorphous solid (sort of between a liquid and a solid), but the rippling and differences in thickness in panes of old glass are due to the manufacturing process, not any movement in the glass molecules. In early glass making, the molten glass was blown, flattened, and then spun into panes. The outer edges of these panes were thicker than the middle, and some panes contained concentric ripples. For whatever reason, glass installers used the practices of installing the glass with the thickest part at the bottom.
