Refills and travel just make sense!

The next time you travel, you may notice refillable shampoo, conditioner, soap, and lotion containers for your use rather than the previously provided small plastic bottles.

New York State is cutting down on single-use plastics and, hotels, apartment hotels, motels, and boarding houses of all sizes no longer provide small plastic bottles of personal care amenity products as a hospitality but instead may opt to provide more sustainable alternatives. This means even if you forget some of your personal care products at home, you may have a low waste option available to you.

Since January 1, 2025, under the NYS Small Plastic Bottle Hospitality Personal Care Product Restrictions Law, hotels, apartment hotels, motels, and boarding houses with 50 or more guestrooms have been prohibited from distributing small plastic amenity bottles for personal care products in guest rooms at properties. Beginning January 1, 2026, this requirement expands to all properties with fewer than 50 guestrooms as well.

Reducing single-use bottles will help cut down litter, improving the recycling stream allowing more containers to be recycled into new products as well as conserving product for use instead of both products and bottles ending up in our landfills.

Convenience doesn’t have to come wrapped in plastic.

dishwasher tablets work just like the pods most of us are used to! Drop one in and you’re done.

The difference? They’re completely plastic-free, made in Tennessee, and still get dishes beautifully clean.

Many traditional dishwasher pods are wrapped in a dissolvable plastic film that doesn’t always fully break down in our waterways. Switching to tablets like these helps reduce unnecessary plastic without changing how you do the dishes.

It’s a small swap, but one that fits easily into everyday routines, and that’s what sustainable systems are all about!

📦Let’s Fill the Box Together!

We’ve placed a donation box right here at UpStream Refillery for canned & dry-goods that will go directly to our friends at Cleveland, TN Community Resources!

Here’s what we often see and what CAN make a big difference:
✅ Canned veggies (we get a lot—thank you!)
✅ Canned meats or fish (important for protein)
✅ Shelf-stable milk or boxed milk alternatives
✅ Pet food (many families include furry friends, too)
✅ Personal care items (toothpaste, shampoo, soap, feminine hygiene)

Why these?

Many food pantries are still lacking canned meats, shelf-stable milk, and personal-care essentials.

While canned veggies are great and appreciated, they often get donated in large quantities—so items that stretch a meal or meet a different need are especially helpful!

Hygiene & household items are rarely covered by many assistance programs, so your donation of soap, shampoo or pet food really helps restore dignity and balance.

🌟 How you can help:
• Grab a couple extra items when you’re shopping this week and drop them by the box inside our refillery.
• Spread the word share this with friends or tag someone who loves local community efforts.
• Let’s make sure the box stays full and the support stays consistent.
