My bedding philosophy is all about layers, texture and ease. Crisp sheets, a beautiful duvet, pillows that feel collected rather than perfectly matched, and a throw casually layered at the end.

Nothing too precious. Nothing too perfect. Just soft, inviting and effortlessly elevated.

Because your bed should look just as good at 2PM as it feels getting into it at 10PM.

Molding, trim, millwork—these are the elements that give a space depth, character and a sense of permanence. The difference between a room that simply looks finished and one that feels truly considered often comes down to the craftsmanship you notice only when it’s done right.

So, when should you hire an interior designer?

For a new build, ideally while the architectural plans are still being developed. For a renovation, before the contractor’s scope and budget are finalized. And for furnishings, before you begin ordering pieces—or several months before you’d like the space to feel complete.

Early involvement gives us the opportunity to think through the home as a whole: how the rooms flow, where the furniture will sit, what needs to be wired, which materials should continue from one space to another, and where the budget will have the greatest impact.

You don’t need to have every answer before reaching out. In fact, helping you find those answers is part of the job.

Earlier this year, my dear friend Pierce, the owner of Chicologie, came to me with the opportunity to move into a larger showroom. One with natural light, which is no small thing when your work revolves around the color, texture and detail of luxury vintage clothing.

His vision was wonderfully specific: he wanted the space to feel like his clients’ dream closet.

So that became our starting point. We designed custom built-ins around the room to display the collection more like a beautifully kept wardrobe than traditional retail merchandise. At the center sits a vintage library table, now layered with scarves, shoes and objects to discover.

Many of the furnishings came from the estate of a very special collector, including the library table, a hand-painted Maitland-Smith library cabinet and a group of vintage fashion prints that could not feel more at home with Pierce and his collection.

The result is personal, collected and a little unexpected—a showroom, yes, but never one intended to feel like a store.

Before choosing countertops or saving fifty versions of the perfect unlacquered brass faucet, start with how you need the kitchen to work.

How do you move through it? What are you constantly reaching for? Where do groceries land? Do you entertain often—or need somewhere for everyone to hover without standing directly in your prep zone?

The answers aren’t quite as exciting as marble samples, but they’re what make the finished kitchen feel intuitive, personal, and genuinely enjoyable to live in.

Save this for the very beginning of your kitchen planning, not the week before demolition.

The best end table in the room isn’t always an end table.

Here, a woven basket topped with a vintage trunk creates exactly the height and surface we needed—but with far more character than something chosen simply to fill the space. The basket brings warmth and texture, the trunk adds history and structure, and together they become a foundation for the more personal layers: books, photographs, collected objects and soft lamplight.

Rooms become much more interesting when we stop asking objects to perform only the job they were originally given. Sometimes the unexpected choice is the one that makes a space feel entirely its own.

I’m Mackenzie Marx, interior designer and the eye behind Mackenzie Marx Interiors. My approach to design is rooted in creating spaces that feel elevated, collected and deeply personal, never overly styled, never trend-driven for the sake of it.

I’m drawn to thoughtful details, beautiful materials, pieces with history and rooms that feel layered over time. My goal is always to create a home that feels uniquely yours while still feeling cohesive, intentional and timeless.

For me, good design is about more than how a space looks. It’s about how it makes you feel when you walk through the door.

A great client-designer fit isn’t about handing over the keys and having no opinions—or agreeing on every single selection from the start.

It’s really a mix of trust, honest communication, realistic conversations about budget, and enough creative alignment to know we’re moving toward the same feeling.

You should feel comfortable telling your designer what matters to you. And you should also feel excited when they bring you an idea you might not have chosen on your own.

The best projects feel collaborative, easy to talk about, and just adventurous enough. That’s where the good stuff usually happens.

A second home should still feel like home.

For this Room Refresh in Bonita Springs, our clients wanted their winter escape to carry the same sense of warmth and comfort they love in their Ohio home—while still feeling distinctly Floridian and a little like a stay at their favorite hotel.

We kept their existing sofa and built the room around it, layering in a wool rug, custom drapery to soften and frame the view of the bay, vintage art, and wonderfully unusual leather-and-canvas chairs sourced in Naples. In the bedroom, a custom upholstered bed introduced a tailored stripe, while floral textiles and another vintage seascape brought in softness and history.

The patterns are playful, the pieces are collected and nothing feels overly coordinated. Just familiar enough to feel like home, with a little more fun for Florida.
