Design direction before decisions—this is how costly mistakes are avoided. Booking Link below

One of the biggest mistakes I see after events like High Point Market? Homeowners try to apply trends before they have a plan.

Trends aren’t the problem. Using them without context is.

At market, everything is: thoughtfully scaled, intentionally layered, and designed as a complete environment

In real homes, what’s often missing is: how the layout supports the design, how selections connect from room to room, how the space will actually function day to day. That’s where things start to feel “off”, even when everything looks beautiful on its own.

These questions are what defines if I completed my job for each of my clients and their projects. This is why I always guide clients to define direction first. Because trends should support a plan. Not replace one.

If you’re gathering ideas for a project this year but aren’t sure how they translate into your home, that’s exactly where I come in.

I just got back from High Point Market, where thousands of new products, materials, and ideas are introduced to the design industry.

And while it’s an incredible source of inspiration, it also reinforces something I see with clients all the time:

Seeing what’s out there is not the same as knowing what will work in your home.

At market, everything is beautifully styled, perfectly scaled, and intentionally curated.

Real homes are different. They require decisions about:

• how spaces function day to day
• how rooms connect to one another
• how materials work together across an entire home
• how to invest in the right places, and where to pull back

Without that level of planning, it’s easy to fall in love with individual pieces that don’t fully come together.

That’s where design becomes more than selection. It becomes guidance.

Whether I’m helping a client plan a renovation or refresh a single room, the goal is the same:

To make sure every decision supports the overall result, before anything is purchased or installed.

If you’re thinking about updating your home this year and want clarity before making decisions, I’d be happy to talk through your project.

Show me you went to in 1 photo! 😂😎✌️ Over the next week I will be posting photos of the trends I noticed, including the micro themes that may have been overlooked. Over 2,000 showrooms and vendors were on display for this incredible yearly event as Interior Designers flood High Point North Carolina! We go to meet with our reps, see the new products coming out, and find new sources for everything we specify: rugs, lighting, decor, art-they have it all!

Receiving a National Design Award from the American Society of Interior Designers was an honor. Not because of the recognition itself, but because of what it represents.

Peer recognition at a national level reflects something deeper than style. It reflects discipline. Problem solving. Design leadership.

The best interiors are never about selecting beautiful things alone. They are about resolving space thoughtfully. Aligning function, architecture, materials, and experience into something cohesive and lasting.

That is the standard I bring to every project.

Whether guiding a renovation, reimagining a floor plan, or developing a more refined interior, my work has always been rooted in the belief that good design should solve as beautifully as it looks.

In a crowded field, specialization matters. Thoughtful planning matters. Design leadership matters.

That has always been the foundation of JMP Interiors.

"Oh, you're an Interior Designer? What exactly do you do..."

There’s often a moment in a project when homeowners realize: There are more decisions to make than they expected. Not just the visible ones, but the ones that quietly shape how a home functions every day.

How spaces connect and flow. How layout supports daily life. How materials relate across rooms (read that to mean TRANSITIONS). How lighting is layered and placed. How everything comes together as a whole.

This is where the process matters. My role is to bring structure to those decisions; so they happen in the right order, with a clear understanding of how each one impacts the next.

It’s not about making the process more complicated. It’s about making it more clear. Because when decisions are aligned early, the entire project moves more smoothly; and the final result feels cohesive, intentional, and easy to live in.

Whether it’s a renovation or a focused update, that clarity is what makes the difference.

Modern design is often mistaken as simplicity. In reality, it demands a higher level of discipline, clarity, and coordination than most realize.

Spaces like this are not defined by what is added, but by what is intentionally resolved.

Every element has been considered:

• how the ceiling detail defines the architecture
• how lighting is integrated rather than applied
• how materials create continuity without competing
• how the layout supports both function and experience

There is no excess to hide behind.
Which means every decision carries more weight. This is where design leadership becomes essential. Because without a clear framework guiding those decisions, modern spaces can easily feel incomplete rather than refined.

At JMP Interiors, the focus is not just on creating beautiful spaces, but on ensuring every element is aligned before construction begins, so the final result feels cohesive, intentional, and enduring. That level of clarity is what defines exceptional design.

Trim is one of those elements that quietly defines how a home feels. When it’s thoughtfully planned, it brings structure, proportion, and a sense of finish to a space. When it’s not, something can feel slightly off, even if everything else is beautiful.

In spaces like a foyer or family room, trim does more than frame the room:

• it establishes visual hierarchy
• it connects spaces to one another
• it reinforces the architecture of the home
• it helps newer updates feel integrated, not added on

Details like this aren’t typically decided during construction. They’re considered ahead of time, so they feel intentional once installed. Because it’s often the quieter elements that make a home feel complete.

A question I’m often asked after conversations about refreshing a space is:

“What does working with a designer actually look like for something small?”

The answer is simpler than most people expect.

For a room refresh, whether it’s a living room, a space off the kitchen, or an area that just doesn’t feel quite right; the process usually starts with understanding how the space needs to function.

From there, we focus on:

• refining the layout so the room flows naturally
• determining the right scale and placement for furniture
• identifying what stays, what goes, and what’s missing
• coordinating materials, finishes, and overall feel
• creating a clear plan before any purchases are made

It’s not about making things more complicated. It’s about making decisions easier; and making sure everything works together before you invest in new pieces.

Because even a single room can feel completely different when it’s been thoughtfully planned. Here is a computer rendering of a dining area I am working on. Sometimes, we just need to see our spaces through a different lens. Showing this client how the use of vertical space will help her with storage concerns.

If you’ve been looking at a space in your home and thinking “something just isn’t working,” that’s usually where this process begins. I am here to help. Send me a message so we can plan your spaces.
