Lordy it’s already been a full morning checking in on ‘everyone’ and making sure their waters are topped off before the heat of the day sets in ❤️🥰🔥

One of the things I try to tell people when they ask me about ‘choosing’ which animals to have as they start out or start to slowly grow bigger, is to know your limitations and that of the animals/breeds you are wanting! Do you want them for ‘lawn pets’ or to actually help your farm?

Not all animals or breeds of certain animals are made for the heat we experience in South Ga AND not everyone who wants to have a homestead is experienced enough or have the adequate time for all animals.

I will always tell people a small set of chickens will do you good to start, but choose a dual purpose breed if you plan to actually raise meat. There are several dual purpose Chicken Breeds (we don’t raise Cornish cross only dual purpose meat), Black Australorps, Langshans, Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Marand, Ameraucanas and so many more! I highly encourage you to research what breed pairs with your climate area and their growth-processing time to ensure you want that time frame. We love dual purpose for many reasons, one because we get eggs for a long time before we decide to butcher, & two because we get to have them around longer to keep us company and look pretty! Also ensure you have the proper simple set up for chicks, full grown, etc depending on what stage you want to get them. Chickens DO NOT need fancy coops, swings, etc. They need a coop, shade, water, feed and love!

IF you have the heart, meat rabbits are easy, efficient and for us are dual purpose because we love to love them! Again ensure you get a cold hearty or heat hearty breed depending on your climate. Base it off of the coldest or hottest months! Rabbits yield manure that is top notch, amazing meat yields and pelts! I did say if you have the heart because the first few kills can do a number on you…especially if you love them like we do.

Do we have or have had lots more than just rabbits and chickens?! You bet BUT our 130+ animals are a full time job and cost a decent about of feed each month and Id never suggest to anyway to ‘jump all in’.

Later in the month we will talk about Goats, Turkeys & Pigs and then you can see why we don’t suggest ‘starting there’ ❤️

A little bit of sweat, really dirty hands,a whole lotta watering and praying and 3 months later we have 8ft tall corn in the field FULL of cobs ripening!

Sometimes it’s hard to stop and take a break and revel in the beauty of our hard work because we seem to work nonstop and that’s OK, because we love this life more than anything…HOWEVER I love keeping a journal and a farm log to help track our germination and production rates, our animal husbandry, our inventory of seeds, soils, and equipment, and to be able to see progress like this. When I tell you that we spend every free moment working this soil, I mean it and not a single one of us would have it any other way.

I’ve had tons of people reach out to me and ask what our secret to our corn is… The easiest answer I can give you is good soil. We use all of our animal manure and their bedding as compost and get it tilled and harrowed into the soil before we plant. We also let our fields grow over and when they die back , wait till that end because the nutrients that comes from the ‘weeds’ are important to soil quality.

Once our corn is ripe and we pick it, we will make half cream corn and the rest use for corn on the cob or use the kernels. We will let a good bit of our kernels dry on the cobs and then we will grind them into fresh cornmeal and fresh grits. We also use our cobs after the kernels are off to make corn cob jelly, we use the silk for tea, the stalks and leaves for livestock forging, and the husk we dry for many things. One of the things we value most on our farm is using every piece of something that we can.

We may not be big commercial farmers, but we are farmers nonetheless and it makes my heart happy to know that I am a fifth generation farmer through and through. Later this week, I will have some videos posted that I’m getting transferred from the other page to help y’all see our process for the corn and bean/pea fields.

The watermelons are loving the rain and dampness! We have people ask us our preferred method of planting and tending to them and its simple for us…well manured soil and then seed in…keep watered at the base and let them VINE!

It doesn’t matter if you choose to plant them in a raised bed area or a field…you need to ensure that you have plenty of space for them to spread. They are a ground vine type of crop, but you can trellis them if you’re gonna do smaller watermelons.

We have a patch in one of our fields for our large watermelons and then we use an extra large kid pool for our mini melons. Both ways yield amazing quantities of fruit and are super easy to maintain!!

Remember, you do not have to have a large piece of property, expensive equipment, or even the help of somebody who can break soil and till it… You can use so many things to accomplish a ‘raised bed’!

When people ask me what I’m doing on ‘XYZ’ day…working 😄🤷🏻‍♀️ you come to my house and I’m going to have you picking a certain part of the farm or you have to keep up while we work…no idle hands here ❤️😂🤷🏻‍♀️

A quick 15mins between getting the field ready to till to put pumpkins in, gave me time to squeeze in this quick pick yesterday!

Salsa, pickles and squash casserole loading!

Let’s check on one corn field and talk about how to know when it’s ready to pick ❤️

We use all the parts of our corn…husk, silks, cobs and the left over plants go to help feed the livestock!
