Happy Halloween from Marci Jo’s Boutique! 🎃👻

Every October I pull out my Halloween quilts, and it’s like visiting old friends. Here are a few I’ve made over the years: a log cabin jack-o’-lantern framed in vintage postcard fabric, a red-haired witch with button bats, a not-so-spooky teal ghost, and a whole patch of candy corn.

Bag progress update! 🦌👖

The outside of the messenger bag is really coming together!

🦌 The vintage deer scarf is now the flap, crochet lace edge and all, with the twist-lock closure attached.
🤐 Under the flap there’s a front zipper pocket, a handy spot for keys, cards, and lip balm.
👖 The back has the original jean pockets, put to work again. They’re already built, and they’re the best part of upcycling!

I’m having so much fun watching old things turn into something new. Next up: the lining, the strap, and the finishing touches.

Something new is on the table! 🦌🧵

Old jeans + a vintage dresser scarf + a vintage linen tablecloth + a little hardware from my stash = a messenger bag in the making!

That sweet little deer scarf has been waiting for a second act, and I couldn’t let it sit in a drawer any longer. The denim will give it sturdy bones, the plaid linen will line the inside, and the antique brass hardware ties it all together. Even the “handmade” tags are ready to go.

I love giving beautiful old things a new life. Stay tuned for the progress shots! 💙

The big reveal! 🎉

Remember the sneak peek from my sewing room? Here’s what those vintage woven place mats turned into: two little crossbody bags! 👜✨

I left the fringe on for fun and added copper studs for a little sparkle. Each bag has a long strap, a magnetic snap closure, and a lining made from a beautiful recycled turquoise scarf. Thank you to everyone who took a guess! 💛

Off to college, wrapped in memories. 💙❤️

Another memory quilt is headed home, and this one makes my heart happy! 🥹

A mom sent me a big pile of her son’s favorite T-shirts and keepsakes so he could take a piece of his childhood with him to college. Thomas the Train, a sweet little firetruck with button wheels, Spider-Man, Yosemite, Hilton Head, Camp Car 2023, and plenty of car shirts for the gearhead in the family. Every block tells a little piece of his story.

She chose to add a red border and a charcoal minky edge, and I love how it frames all those memories. It’s now boxed up and on its way via FedEx. 📦

Playing in the sewing room! 🧵✨

Here’s a little sneak peek at something new on my table. I found two vintage woven place mats with the most wonderful Southwestern patterns: sunbursts, steer skulls, and zigzag mountains in mustard, mauve, and turquoise. I couldn’t resist adding some square copper studs to give them a little extra something.

Then I paired them with a gorgeous recycled scarf in the loveliest shade of turquoise, plus a strip of fabric that will be part of the finished piece. Don’t those colors just sing together?

I’m not telling what it becomes just yet. 😉 Stay tuned, because I’ll share the finished item in a follow-up post!
