We’ll file this one under “Well that’s kinda crazy” Thursday. You saw the mugs I posted the other day that had the identical glaze and application, but fired at different temps. This is the same glaze and application, but on different clay bodies. So many things affect glaze outcomes. It’s kind of a miracle when any hand brushed glaze outcome is ever duplicated! 🪄

This post is for my own logging. I was testing/comparing Mayco’s classic light flux, the new white flux and the new clear flux. (A flux is an agent that lowers the melting point of a glaze during firing and allows it to run) I like to test them because they can alter glaze colors occasionally (perfect example here is the blue that came out on the black, even though I used a “clear” flux) It’s important to test your new glazes, peeps!

Holy wow! I don’t know if you remember this handsome copper fellow on the left that wound up in the “Oops” album for big glaze flaws. I assume the problems were caused by firing it too hot (cone 6 for the glazers). However, that’s how I got the gorgeous copper color to come out.
🎬 Take 2!! The mug on the right is the IDENTICAL glaze and application. It was fired a little cooler (cone 5). While I lost a lot of the copper, the crystals I gained are nothing short of fantastic!🤯🤩😍 ✨🌌🙌🏼 Glaze is finicky and it likes what it likes. It would appear that cone 6 is too hot for the crystals but perfect for the metallic, while cone 5 made those crystals shine but muted the copper. Which do you prefer? I can’t decide.
