Trees, I could spend my entire life painting trees: the light coming through them, what we see peaking through behind them, trees standing guard, shielding, the shadows they make, trees yielding to wind, and the shapes of light between them. I started a street scene recently, but after only a few minutes shouted aloud, "I am bored already...." and I picked up a canvas and painted these trees. Passion for something always says more than a record of something else.

When I'm in nature, I always react emotionally and my job as an artist is to translate the human emotional response into something tangible. The viewer isn't going to have the same emotional response to my art as I did to nature, that's not my goal. When I see a storm of light over a lake, such as this oil fresh off the easel today, the viewer must find their own emotional response or choose not to respond and move on -- their response isn't my concern or even considered when I make art. This still reminds me of Edward Hopper's empty cities but that isn't the same as being influenced by Hopper. The isolation of my images comes from an effort to paint the atmosphere, the air around "The Thing" rather than the thing it's self. This painting is at least 5 years old but although it is one of my rare urban scenes, the sky scraper could just as easily have been a dead tree trunk with all its limbs missing -- the painting is about the mood of the air, not the structures.
I am getting ready to work on a new series. Now that I have moved from the country to the city, I think I may explore more urban areas -- or at least seek out the nooks and crannies of wildness left in our cities.

I love the silver lining of COVID! I can now share the artwork accepted into the Master/Signature Pastel Society of the West Coast -- PSWC-- "Woodland Scrabble". Because of Covid, anyone can follow the link below and see the exhibition. Because of Covid, events like this allowed me to attend virtually and hear the comments of the awards judge Loriann Signori about the mark and scratches that drew her to this artwork. The Calligraphy of those marks helped me to express nature's chaos when I am among all the trees. I enter juried exhibitions hoping to get in and share my personal vision, but every time I win an award, I am humbled, and honored. Loriann awarded this an honorable mention. Covid' silver lining for me was the opportunity to receive more than I can ever give back. Thanks to all the PSWC volunteers, exhibition sponsors and to Pam Comfort for her tireless efforts -- this woman has the energy of the Sun!

Here's why I don't listen to what the trend is, or what someone says is selling. One of my gallery owners pulled me aside one night and said, "Red, right now my buyers can't stop buying paintings with a lot of red. I don't know why." My reply: I paint what I want, and often times I don't even know where a painting is headed until it and I arrive at the finish line together .
I guess red violet is a cousin of red, they are what they are and I am happy to wait until the people my gallerist spoke of decide they like red-violet, mauve or orange. I paint to please myself first.

One of my recent Pastel Paintings was accepted for exhibition and magazine publication.....unfortunately I can't show the work to you until the exhibition opens, but I can share the acceptance letter. Check back and I will post the artwork and give you a link to see the exhibit. What is thrilling is that I was competing with Master pastelist from all over the country in this exhibit -- the best of the best artist are placed in the Master/Signature division. To have been accepted in the Master's division -- for me-- is exciting. More later ....thanks for your support of my artwork everyone.

Have you ever gone on vacation expecting to have fun and it wasn't relaxing at all? That's this painting. I think my subconscious was feeling the pain of wildfire season and the hurt people were going through. I thought it was going to be the warmth of the sun while hiking in my favorite forest. I still like the painting, not every landscape has to be comfortable, and this one I guess wasn't meant to be.
