Whatever happened to Sunday dinner?
When I was a kid, many many years ago, every Sunday had a specific routine. We got up, ate a light breakfast and went to church, dressed to the nines. When we got home the entire house seemed to scramble into action. Mom and Dad would change their clothes and head into the kitchen. My sisters and I would set the table and help Momma get dinner on. And yes, we called it Sunday dinner, even though it generally happened between about 12 and 2. The entire family would sit down to eat together, discuss the previous week, talk about things coming up in the following week, and just enjoy spending a little time together. It may not have always been a super lavish meal, but we always took our time at the table. Our lives were busy then and Sunday dinner was a way for the whole family to reconnect. And every single time, my mother would make a pan of rolls. Much the same way my grandmother would: in a black iron skillet. That black iron skillet was ever-present at Sunday dinner, no matter what my mother served. And, if I’m being honest, it was always my favorite part of the meal.
I know the world has changed since then. In a multitude of ways….when I really stop and think about it, it feels like a century ago. Now that my own kids are growing up, it’s still an activity that I like to engage in. It is a ritual that is still precious to me and though I’m not as good as my mother about getting it on at the same time (every. single. Sunday!!), when I can get it together, it’s a time I really treasure with my own family.
Recently, my husband made these beautiful serving trays. Simple and elegant in their own way, I can’t think of a better way to use them than to serve rolls at my Sunday dinner table.
