“Polka Dot Begonia” is such a fitting nickname for these honestly, but their full botanical name is Begonia maculata ‘Wightii’.
The “Begonia maculata” part is the species, while “Wightii” is the cultivar; basically a cultivated version selected for certain traits like leaf shape, spotting, or growth habit. That’s why not every “Polka Dot Begonia” looks exactly the same.
Common names make plants easier to recognize and share with people, but botanical names help tell them apart when there are multiple cultivars involved.
It’s kind of like seeing a Bulbasaur and just calling it a “grass type Pokémon.” Like… yeah, technically correct, but that could also mean Chikorita, Oddish, Bellsprout, or 47 other leafy little weirdos.
