Jean Charlot, 1898-1979, was a distinguished artist, teacher, art historian, and playwright. He was born in Paris and moved to Mexico in 1921, where he played an instrumental role in the Mexican Mural Renaissance, completing the movement's first mural in true fresco in 1922-1923. After working as an illustrator for an archeological expedition in the Chich’en Itza, Mexico, he came to the United States in 1928, where he worked as an artist, professor, and writer; moving to Hawaii in 1949. The prolific Charlot created 74 murals and monumental sculptures; over 1200 oil paintings; 772 original prints; 51 published books, plays and portfolios; many illustrations for books; and numerous scholarly and popular articles.

Among the honors bestowed on Charlot was the election by the Royal Society of Art, London, as a Benjamin Franklin Fellow in 1972. In 1976, the Hawaiʻi State Legislature presented Charlot with the Order of Distinction for Cultural Leadership. In June of that year, Charlot was among a distinguished group of persons recognized by the Living Treasure Committee, sponsored by the Living Treasure Committee, sponsored by Honpa Hongwanji Mission, for "contributions to Hawaiʻi's culture and the preservation of Hawaiiana." Charlot, known as "Palani" or Frenchman among his Hawaiian friends, was named a "Living Treasure" for his paintings and murals showing his deep appreciation of Hawaiʻi's culture.

Ancient Egyptian or Levantine khopesh sword with golden pommel, late Middle Kingdom – Second Intermediate Period, 1900-1600 B.C.

Length 65.4 cm. Width of the blade 4.95 cm. Thickness of the blade 0.8 cm. Width of the shaft 3.05 cm. Thickness of the shaft 0.8 cm. Diameter of the golden pommel 4.25 cm.

This is an early type of khopesh sword, which is different from types of khopesh swords, characteristic to New Kingdom period.

Early Khopesh swords (sickle swords) are much more rare than later New Kingdom period khopesh swords.

Massive and heavy bronze khopesh sword, cast of single piece of bronze, in solid, firm condition, covered with green patina, surface of oxidation layer most probably cleaned. The sharp edge of the blade was damaged (most probably by corrosion or/and mechanical impact) and restored using some kind of resign. Golden pommel with crack.

In absolutely intact condition. Scratches on one edge. Made of black stone. Fatjanovo culture, East Europe.

Provenance: Parthenon Gallery, London. It comes from Hans Bl**er Collection, Switzerland, acquired in the 1970s. Sold in Galerie Nefer, Zurich, in 1987. Later in private British collection. With Parthenon Gallery, London.

Strong points
1. The design of koshirae is Kojima Takanori.
Kojima Takanori is a samurai who was active as a Nancho (Southern Court) in the first half of Nanbokucho period.

Kojima Takanori tried to recapture Emperor Go-Daigo on the way to Oki, but he couldn't do it.
It is said that he sneaked into the emperor's inn and cut the trunk of the cherry tree in the garden
to write a cross poem associated with the story of the Chinese Sword of Goujian.

This Koshirae pattern represents the scene.

2. We run a Japanese sword shop in Tokyo.
3. You can return this sword within 60 days because we have great confidence on this sword.

Serious buyers with basic understandings only please

As many knows, the 兼Kane character in the Mei oftenly indicates a 美濃Mino(関Seki) origin of the smith. It was told that the first generation 志津三郎兼氏 Shizu Saburo Kaneuji, one of the 正宗十哲 Masamube Jittetsu (the ten celebrited students of the legendary smith 正宗Masamune), migrated to the country of 美濃Mino from the country of 大和Yamato, and start from there the sword forging in Seki gradually prosper and produced several famous 末古刀Sue-Koto smith groups in respond to the great demand of blades for intensive warfares during the Warring state period (戦国時代 Sengoku Jidai, late Muromachi period).

It was told that the first generation 兼春Kaneharu was the son of 志津兼行Shizu Kaneyuki, one of the representing smith of the 三阿弥San-ami branch of the famous 直江志津Naoe Shizu school in the country of 美濃Mino.

The Kaneharu smith line had multiple generations, and was mainly actived during mid to late 室町時代Muromachi period.

as shown in the photos, despite been Suriage'd ("shortened from Nakago tang") and fitted to multiple different Koshirae by the previous owners as one can tell from the Nakago, the original Mei signature 兼春 was perfectly preserved and making this a valuable Zaimei sample of their work. It has numbers of minor cosmetic forging imperfections here and there as shown in the photos, like many of the other blades made for warfare from that period of history, but the craftmanship is still very enjoyable with rich activities to study and enjoy from fire-like patterned Hamon.
