🌱 100 Sandbags, 1 Cubic Yard of Sand, and a Whole Lot of Winter Prep! 💪🏻
We’ve been busy preparing the farm for the colder months! We recently picked up one cubic yard of sand in our truck and filled 100 sandbags with approximately 20 pounds each! Believe it or not, that was almost exactly the amount of sand we needed!
These sandbags will be used for many growing seasons to weigh down the plastic covering our four low tunnels, helping protect thousands of flowers and plants from winter weather. 🌷❄️
In previous years, we used a combination of cinderblocks, bricks, and stones to hold down our plastic. While they got the job done, their rough edges were causing unnecessary wear and tearing. We decided it was time to invest in a better, longer-lasting solution!
Sustainability isn’t always about eliminating materials. Sometimes it’s about making what you already use last longer. 🌎♻️
Plastic is an unfortunate reality of everyday life, whether you’re farming, gardening, working in construction, or just going about your day. While we’d love to eliminate it entirely, that’s not always practical. Instead, we do our best to reduce, reuse, and recycle wherever possible.
Our hope is that these sandbags will last for many years, while also helping us extend the life of our greenhouse plastic for several growing seasons with proper care. Less waste, fewer replacements, and hopefully fewer headaches!
Is 2,000 pounds of sandbags more weight than we actually need? Probably! 😂 But we’d rather be overprepared than watch our low tunnels take flight during a winter windstorm!
🎥 Tune in for a quick, one-minute video where I explain what we’re working on, why we made the switch, and how we’re preparing our growing spaces for winter!
There’s always something happening behind the scenes at Beetles, Bones & Bouquets, even when the flowers aren’t blooming! 🌸🌱
