Common Fleabane - Erigeron philadelphicus, the Philadelphia fleabane, is a species of flowering plant in the composite family (Asteraceae).

Other common names include philadelphia daisy, common fleabane, daisy fleabane, frost-root, marsh fleabane, poor robin's plantain, skevish or skervish, and, in the British Isles, robin's-plantain, but all of these names are shared with other species of fleabanes (Erigeron). It is native to North America and has been introduced to Eurasia.

The blooms last for a very long time. We are experimenting with some cut flowers to see if they would be a good species to offer our florists and customers.

Wildlife: It is a valuable nectar source for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

Folklore: The name "fleabane" originates from an old belief that dried bunches of the plant could repel or kill fleas.

Care: If grown in a garden, it prefers moist, well-drained soil and full to partial sun. Be aware that it can seed itself prolifically and may become "weedy" if not managed.

PHOTOS: The first photo was taken just before the sunrise that is why the flowers are mostly closed up. They open quickly when the suns rays hit them. The second photo was taken of the same plant later on the same day in the morning.

All Asclepias species – are the required host plants for monarch caterpillars, and provide critical support for their survival. The Monarch butterfly natural habitat and numbers are continuing to decline, so make sure to Include plenty of Milkweeds in your landscape/garden for added support.

Earlier this spring we hosted a fund raising plant sale for Milkweed Matters. Several folks purchased hundreds of plants "for the bugs." 😊 If you would like to find out more about these wonderful plants there is tons of information online.

If you come out to the farm/store today please excuse the mess. We are picking up the tree parts from the storm a few days ago. Hopefully we will be finished with that little project before the days end.

Another splattering of moisture overnight has dampened the gardens. I believe we are caught up for the year at the farm.

The folks south of us here in Iowa and eastern Nebraska could sure use your prayers and support. The storm from the night before last beat up some communities.
