Today is International Day of Charity, and we thought it was the perfect time to remind our sewing and quilting community that your talents — and even some of those extra supplies in your stash — can be put to good use right here in our area.

Have finished blankets or quilts you'd like to give? Extra fabric or sewing supplies you know you're never going to use? Here are a few local organizations worth knowing about:

St. Benedict Catholic Church – Prayer Blanket Ministry
Their local ministry sews and crochets prayer blankets for people going through difficult times. Contact the ministry before dropping off materials or finished items to see what they currently need.

Seauxing Seeds Foundation – Covington
A great local option for extra sewing supplies! Seauxing Seeds accepts donations and lists cotton and flannel fabric among the items they can use.

Northshore Food Bank Resale Shop – Covington
Have usable fabric, textiles, or other items that may be better suited for resale? Donated goods help support the Northshore Food Bank and its work in our community.

Before donating, we recommend contacting the organization first, especially for handmade items or large quantities of supplies, since needs and guidelines can change.

Sewing has always been about more than fabric and thread. Sometimes something made with our own two hands can bring a little comfort to someone who needs it.
