The honey harvest is done! We're waiting to get our label maker parts in so we can get to work. In the meantime, we've still got 8oz- $10 ready to go!

We've been extremely blessed this year as we acquired a 20 frame extractor for helping out a new friend who retired from the business. This is sooooo much better than hand-cranking two frames at a time!

What do you do with crystallized honey that you don't have time to gently de-crystalyze? You make creamed honey of course! It's still an all natural, nothing added, raw product but after 10 days in the fridge, it's a solid at room temp and great for spreading!

I thought I would give a one week update on our orphaned babies. Unfortunately, on Tuesday afternoon, the little brown one had passed. He started a downward spiral Monday morning and got better that night, did well Tuesday morning and then passed quickly that afternoon. It's so hard when you can't save them but all we can do is the best we can.

The grey rabbit is doing great and has quite the personality. It (won't know s*x for a few weeks still) loves to sleep on me and has recently taken to sitting on my shoulder to nap. We're calling it Basil 🌱

Raising rabbits can involve a lot of heartbreak. We had a mom who was doing fine and suddenly killed 4 of her 6 kits this morning. They are roughly 12 days old, just little overgrown cotton balls. Bottle feeding is extremely hard to do and many kits die because they refuse the bottle. However, 🙌 we can celebrate a little because these two are starting to get it after just one day! It's a waiting game to see if they survive but we're off to a good start. ❤️

Finally in the garden today! I usually wait for two solid weeks of temperatures above 50°F and here is one reason why. 🐞

Ladybugs, among other integral garden helpers, hibernate in the leaves and dead stalks over the winter.

The genetic management of livestock is important and here is an example of why.

Here, we have an unexpected litter of rabbits. Fortunately, it doesn't happen often but every now and then we'll have a misgendered rabbit (a runted male who we initially thought was female) on the floor and he ends up impregnating a doe. Normally, this breed (American Chinchilla) is not albino and we don't typically reproduce with them because of their poor genetics. They have low kit counts and a slew of other health issues. As you can see from the fur pulled, mom is albino.

Litters should have 6-8 kits. She had a total of 4. One was stillborn and one was underdeveloped and not expected to survive. Unfortunately, it didn't. You can see the size difference between healthy born and the underdeveloped kit. This is why we choose which rabbits to breed and which are only for food.

It's not easy and there are sad moments but this is our food and we love them from birth to plate.

Welcome back! It's been a long winter and we have learned so much over these last few months.

Today, I'm stretching a rabbit hide. This was a hide donated to us and I'm preparing it so that it can be used as a fabric. Tanning is a long process and while this is one of the final steps, it takes a while.

This hide is wet, which makes it more pliable and "easier" (it's still a workout) to stretch. Stretching keeps the hide soft and pliable whereas, untanned, it's stiff, fragile and papery feeling. Here, I'm using my hands as well as the bench to help me out. Once this hide is stretched, it will be smoked to finish the tanning process. We'll talk more about that soon 😉

This little lady was cleaning herself as the rain began. You can see her using her rear legs to clean her wax glands on her abdomen. She then moves on to her head and proboscis. Enjoy!
