Another flax field update! https://sagahill.blogspot.com

I'm looking forward to the SOLD OUT drop spindle workshop I'm leading this weekend at the Plymouth Creek Center. We will have lots of fun preparing and spinning wool using traditional methods!

This spring has proven to be a very cold one. I am hoping that linen flax has the stamina of the woodland ephemerals, which are holding their own in my back woods, even with nighttime temperatures in the near-to-freezing level. Linen flax seedlings are known to be able to handle a frost, and even a....

Remember, the Minnesota Shepherd's Harvest Sheep and Wool Festival is this weekend! Hope to see you there! https://shepherdsharvestfestival.org

About two weeks after the harvest, the flax stalks were removed from the fence where they had been hanging to dry. The periodic rains we were receiving were stunting the dry time, so it made more sense to put the stalks under cover in the farm greenhouse to further dry.

It's just around the corner… Shepherd's Harvest Sheep & Wool Festival(Saturday, May 9th & Sunday, May 10th)—the largest annual fiber festival in Minnesota and my only twice-a-year Saga Hill pop-up shop! I've been clearing out parts of my studio space and found a treasure trove of gorgeous fibers that I was going to use "someday." Since my work is currently focusing more on linen flax and less on wool, visitors to the festival will be able to find some rare and oh-so-pretty wool-and-silk blends from my studio. Such variety! But the stock is limited, so come early! You'll find Saga Hill in Building B, Washington County Fairgrounds, Lake Elmo, MN. See you there!

Be sure to check out the event details at the links below. There is something for everyone—not just fiber enthusiasts!

Learn Tvåändstickning (Swedish Two-Ended Knitting)
Saturday, April 11, 2026, 12:30–4 PM
Learn the basics of tvåändsticking (Swedish two-ended/twined knitting) and begin to knit a pair of wristlets. Two-ended knitting is a traditional Swedish knitting technique dating back to at least the 1600s. It uses two ends of yarn, creating a dense fabric. Students will learn how to knit and purl with the two-ended technique and start a pair of wristlets that are not only warm but extremely durable.

Knit Silk Ruffles Like a Swedish Victorian
Sunday, April 19, 2026, 1–4 PM
Working with silk yarn, knitters will create Victorian-style ruffled cuffs to adorn an existing garment or craft a bracelet. The history of garment design in Sweden during the Victorian era will be shared during the workshop, as will the history of silk mills in Sweden. Items from the Victorian era in the ASI archive will also be displayed during the class.

Begin to Knit Like a Swede – a beginning or refresher knitting workshop
Saturday, April 25, 2026, 12:30–4 PM
This workshop is for beginning knitters or those who wish to refresh their dormant knitting skills. Students will learn to cast on, work basic knit and purl stitches using a left-handed wrapping technique, and learn how to finish their work. The project is a small cuff that may be used as a pulse warmer or a cup cozy. The instructor will share the extensive history of Swedish knitting traditions while students work on their project.
Registration: Go to the ASI website (link above) to register.

I'm sorry for the last-minute notice about this event, but here it is:

All are welcome to attend an open house fiber event at Gale Woods Farm this Sunday, February 22, from 1 to 4. The farm is hosting the event and inviting anyone interested in the Three Rivers Park District's fiber programs to attend and learn about the district's 2026 initiatives.

I will present an overview of what has happened and will happen this year with the flax linen program at Gale Woods Farm. There will also be round-robin discussions on the wool program and other fiber-related programs, which continue to expand within the park district.

No registration or fee is required to drop by. Gale Woods Farm is located at 7210 County Road 110 W, Minnetrista, MN 55364. If you have questions, call the farm at 763-694-2001.
