Okay, so I'm cleaning up, paring down, purging, whatever you want to call it. I come across this EAPG Stippled Star goblet. Something I probably picked up in the last few years, for old times sake and it was likely a dollar or so. I thought to myself, "I used to have customers at Brimfield for this." It reminded me of the famous line from Isak Dinesen"s Out of Africa, "I had a farm in Africa ,at the foot of the Ngong hills.", Been doing this full time for the last 32 years. Been messing around with antiques for 50 years or so. Yikes! Started out doing a lot of early glassware and had to relearn the business when that market went away.
Just feeling nostalgic and reminiscing about the way things used to be and really missing the concept of "collectors". I realize there are still collectors out there but they are far fewer in numbers than say 30 or so years ago. And I get it that in these modern times there are many other things that can draw someone's attention and free time. "Call of Duty", for example, lol. So, I just want to say "Here's to those of you who still collect", and if you just use antiques to decorate with, "You're okay too!" 😀

Picked up this stein recently at a local estate sale. Didn't think too much about it. Salt-glazed, circa 1900 with a porcelain inset in the lid of a couple sitting together. There was an inscription under the glaze of the porcelain inset. You know how you can see something and not really see it? Once I got the inscription translated and took a good look at the couple I got it. Thanks to my friend Hans who translated it for me. It reads, "Miss, I don't understand you, not at all. your heart is a cold as January, it makes anybody freeze just to look at you. Am I responsible that any attempt at warming you don't understand? The translation made sense of the scene on the front. The fraulein is looking away from him and doesn't appear to be amused at all. The poor guy went through all the trouble of having the porcelain inset made, glazed and fired and put into the stein lid. I hope the beer was as cold as the shoulder.

Here's a picture of my friend Jerry Campbell with famed Georgia folk potter Lanier Meaders. Jerry brought a group of us to meet Lanier and his brothers John and Edwin, who of course was better known as "Nub". It was an amazing day. I'm thinking it was 1997 and Lanier wasn't in good health. He passed the following year. Jerry, in addition to being a great pottery finder and dealer also acted in a number of TV and movie productions, He was also recently inducted into the Carolinas Boxing Hall of Fame. He currently lives in Wilmington, NC.

Sometimes a little research pays off. Bought these sterling silver pieces at a local estate/yard sale. I thought it was unusual that the cartouche on either side had two different names. One was Alfred H. Angel, the other N.S. Stewart, so I didn't know if maybe it was a wedding gift or what. I started digging, okay Googling. I started with Alfred H. Angel figuring it was a different enough name for any time period and what I came up with, from a couple of sources, was this. Angel was an 18 year old Confederate soldier from South Carolina badly wounded at the battle of Averasboro, NC in March, 1865. He was taken to the home of local Postmaster Neill Stewart where despite their best efforts, he died of his wounds. In gratitude for trying to help their son, the Angel Family sent a large Sterling Silver Tea Service to the Stewarts. Angel's family decided not to bring his body home after the war and he is buried in the Chicora Cemetary near the battle site. How this sugar bowl and waste bowl became separated from the rest of the set is unknown.-SOLD

Here's another scarce piece of 19th century Southern furniture. A sugar chest was used in large homes and plantations. Being a valuable commodity it was kept under lock and key. The interior was usually divided with white sugar on one side and brown sugar, or sometimes coffee, on the other. SOLD!
