I went to Marmomac in Verona expecting to come home thinking about marble. And I did, but not quite in the way I expected. What stayed with me most was the idea that natural stone shouldn’t just be something we are selecting. I saw it left brutally raw, carved, fluted, sculpted, wrapped around forms, paired with metal and transformed into architecture, furniture, and objects.
for my current projects, it made me think less about which stones to use and more about what the stone should do in each space. Should it disappear quietly into the architecture? Become the architecture? Add texture or contrast? Feel ancient or incredibly precise?
Anyone can pick a beautiful slab, but as a designer, I want to use stone as part of the architectural language of a space…that’s something else entirely.
