ASTORIA, OREGON — 1922

“Gigantosharkus Rex” Washes Up in Columbia River, Terrifies Town, Becomes Carnival Favorite

In the spring of 1922, the peaceful fishing town of Astoria, Oregon was rocked—both metaphorically and literally—when the largest and only known great white shark of prehistoric proportions washed up at the mouth of the Columbia River.

Measuring a “good sixty feet” according to terrified local fisherman Bert “Two-Toes” McCaffrey, the creature was first spotted drifting lazily upstream, terrifying steamboat operators, wildlife, and at least one traveling magician. It was eventually wrangled ashore using tugboats, chains, and a suspicious amount of dynamite.

Dubbed “Gigantosharkus Rex”, the behemoth was paraded upstream to Astoria using a specially modified log raft and the tears of scientists who could not believe their luck. Once docked, it was mounted on a pier like a giant meat sculpture and promptly became Oregon’s top tourist attraction. Thousands of onlookers came from as far as Spokane to stare at its teeth, poke it with sticks, and faint.

Local scientists, who had previously only studied salmon and various mosses, suddenly declared themselves shark experts and spent weeks studying the monster, mostly by standing around it smoking pipes and nodding.

Unfortunately, due to a combination of spring heat and curious children tossing bread into its mouth, the shark began to decay rapidly. One bystander described the smell as “if Poseidon himself lost a bet.” After a heated town meeting and an unsuccessful attempt to preserve the shark with lard, it was ceremoniously towed back into the Columbia and released to the river gods.

To this day, residents claim the waters around Astoria hold something special. Beachcombers still occasionally find enormous serrated teeth washing ashore, perfect for souvenirs or unsettling mantel displays.

In honor of the incident, the city now hosts an annual “Shark Week Festival,” featuring a parade, a tooth-painting contest, and the ceremonial dumping of a 200-pound tuna into the river “just in case he comes back.”

Some say he still swims beneath the Columbia. Others say he’s in shark heaven. But one thing’s for sure—Astoria has never looked at salmon the same way again.
