Kotahi Knits

Kotahi Knits Handcrafted 100% wool hats and mittens for you and those you love! KOTAHI is a Maori word meaning "to be one, number one, or to unite together."

I chose this name for my shop as it symbolizes not only the greater strength of multiple fiber strands over one, but on a human level, how we are stronger together, united as one. I am New Zealand born and raised and am proud my ancestors include early Scottish and English settlers and a direct female line to one of Ngai Tahu tribe's earliest founding mothers of southern Maori and Pakeha (non Maor

i) descendants. There are many millions more sheep than people in New Zealand, and sheep and wool products have been central to my country's heritage and economy. My grandfather was a wool buyer and my mother, seemingly always with knitting on her lap when I grew up, taught me to knit when I was seven. I have been knitting ever since; I find it a perfect outlet for my artistic and creative expression and a calming, meditative practice. It is important to me to knit with all-wool yarns because they are a natural and renewable resource. Moreover, wool offers special qualities of warmth, breathability and wicking away of moisture. Most of my hats and mittens are made with superior Merino wool as it is finer and softer than regular wool, making it more comfortable next to your skin. I believe these are qualities which make for a superior garment that will keep you cozy whether you are exploring outside, hanging with friends, or doing the shopping. Because I care about you and the environment, my hand-knit wool crafts are made in a smoke-free home and shipped to you in a non-toxic, reusable and compostable resin package. I also include a free cotton sachet of organic Capay Valley Lavender with each purchase. Lavender naturally repels moths and if stored inside will make your garments smell lovely when worn. Thank you for your interest in Kotahi Knits. and for supporting my small business. It means a lot as I lost my regular job in the Covid pandemic and the income helps support me and my family. TEMPORARY ETSY SHOP CLOSURE!
I want to let you all know that I am traveling home to beautiful New Zealand shortly and will be unable to process orders during that time.

Stay cozy until I get back, with a suitcase that just might contain wool, ha, ha.

Have you seen my possum/merino/silk blend beanies?

Watch this video to see why possum eradication is critical to save New Zealand forests. And that rata bloom is just glorious!

The blossoming happens only every six or seven years, and this year appears more dense and spectacular than ever.
