šæ Design Trend Alert⦠with a Safety Reality Check šæ
Large format tiles + sleek linear drains = š„ one of the hottest shower trends right now. The clean lines, minimal grout joints, and seamless spa-like aesthetic are hard to beat. Designers love them for creating that modern, uninterrupted lookāand homeowners are all in.
But letās pause for a moment and talk about something just as important as design⦠safety.
While large format tile works beautifully on walls, using it on shower floors can introduce slip risksāespecially in wet areas where traction matters most. Fewer grout joints mean fewer natural grip points underfoot.
š Hereās what the standards say:
ANSI recommends a minimum wet DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) of ā„ 0.42 for interior wet areas.
However, many expertsāincluding ITS and leading tile professionalsāstrongly recommend a DCOF of 0.60 or higher for shower pans to better reduce slip-and-fall risk.
š” What does that mean in practice?
That stunning 24"x48" tile might look incredibleā¦but if it doesnāt meet higher slip resistance thresholds, it may not be the best choice for a shower floor.
āļø Consider smaller formats or mosaics for better traction
āļø Verify DCOF ratingsānot all tiles are created equal
āļø Balance aesthetic goals with real-world safety
At the end of the day, great design isnāt just about how it looksāitās about how it performs.
Beautiful + Safe = The real luxury.
