If you’re considering wide-plank white oak for your home, there’s more to choosing the right floor than simply picking the color you like best.

Here’s what I’d have you look at before you make your decision:

• The finish: A matte or wire-brushed finish gives you a more natural, timeless look—and is much more forgiving in a busy home.

• The width: If you love the look of a wide plank, don’t be afraid to go wider. A 7”+ plank can completely change the feel of a room.

• The details: Good flooring is about more than the plank itself. Transitions, installation, layout and craftsmanship all matter.

• The rest of your home: Your wall color, cabinets, countertops and furnishings should all work with your flooring—not compete with it.

• What’s underneath: A properly prepared subfloor is critical. Beautiful flooring can’t make up for poor preparation.

And this is exactly why we encourage homeowners to come see the flooring in person.

Because the sample you see on a screen—or even in a small sample board—can look completely different once you see it across an entire room.
