“There is much going on in your yard that would not be going on if you did not have one or more oak trees gracing your piece of planet earth.”

These large, long-lived trees support more life-forms than any other trees in North America. And they’re magnificent.

It’s(spring/fall) bird migration season. We have joined committed to turn out building lights at night to reduce bird-building collisions. If you need to work late, draw the blinds or use task lighting instead of overhead lighting. The birds will thank you.

Spring Dates: March 15 through May 31

Pictured below Greg White- Decatur Active Living, Doug Oster- volunteer, Neil Norton-volunteer, Sara Horsley- OGFN, and Patti Garret- City of Decatur Mayor. GCNP is tiny but mighty and a perfect example of how a checker board approach to ecology ensures that nature is near you.

Passing along for Decatur Heights neighbors, courtesy of Elizabeth Falconi and Jamie Rosenthal:
Hi All,
As some of you may recall I put out a call late last year for contributions for a memorial plaque in honor of Barbara Snow, our neighbor who passed last November. In February many participated in a triangle park clean up, at Fairview and Ridgeland, when we planted a pear seedling that was donated by Jaime Rosenthal. Since then a pandemic struck, we all hunkered down, and now the park of totally overgrown, with the seedling and plaque buried in a tangle of invasive plants.

Jaime's company, Roots Down, has an idea to transform the triangle space on Ridgeland and Fairview into a healthy, fruitful landscape! Roots Down envisions a space with an abundance of edible species, an accessible area for reading and connecting with community, and an oasis for native plants. The cleanup and installation of this space will be part of a capstone learning project that Roots Down interns are leading. This will be complimentary, as it is for educational purposes. They are looking forward to hearing the community’s thoughts on this project! The full proposal is posted on the Decatur Heights Neighbors Group Page. (I can't post here for some reason). They plan to get started on Monday, September 14th, and welcome any volunteers. Just bring a mask and a water bottle!
