The car collection came a couple of years after we had already finished designing this home, which presented an unusual question: where do you put an entire garage without changing the architecture above? We went underneath it. A new lower level was built below the existing circular driveway, with a hydraulic lift and turntable that lowers each car into the space and allows it to be positioned anywhere in the room.

What started as a need for more storage became an entirely new part of the home, complete with a catering kitchen, lounge space, and views into the surrounding forest.

After 15 years of apartment living in Japan and Hong Kong, this family was used to having daily life unfold across one floor, which presented an interesting challenge when they moved into a four-story Victorian townhouse in Oxford.

We replaced the warren of rooms and later additions at the back of the house with a new kitchen and sitting-room extension, raising the ceiling and bringing in light through three skylights and a wall of glass doors to the garden. The result gave them the openness they were accustomed to without losing the character of the Victorian home.

A home designed for entertaining still needs a place to put your feet up. At Whitehaven, the formal living room was made for hosting, with generous seating scaled to the volume of the room. Just down the hall, the den takes on a completely different personality. Rich grasscloth, fireside seating, and a TV make it the spot for lazy Sundays and everyday downtime. Two living rooms, each with a very different job to do.

Old Cherry Hills Cottage: The Guest Bed & Bath

The three guest bedrooms upstairs are tucked beneath the original roofline, giving each one its own collection of sloped ceilings, dormer nooks, and small architectural moments that came directly from working within the existing house. Each bedroom also has a private bath, so guests have a space that feels distinctly their own without being disconnected from the rest of the home.

The powder room follows the same approach as the rest of the home, using materials that feel natural and understated rather than overly finished. Honed stone, unlacquered brass, and grasscloth will all change with time, developing a patina and character through everyday use. That evolution is part of the appeal of natural materials. They become more interesting as they age and take on the marks of everyday life.
