Dixie Lee Lucy Maggart. My Nani. ❤️
Because life isn’t fair, in most of the ways that count I lost her before this chapter of my life began. But I am confident this business never exists without her.
Growing up, I always felt like she understood me better than anyone. She never made me feel silly or stupid for caring about fashion and design. She introduced me to the finer things in life - Von Maur and long lunches and expensive coffee tables and the jacket I just HAD to have.
She also taught me that you don’t only have to buy beautiful things, you can also create them. My Nani was a DIY-er before that was a “thing”. As a kid I spent lots of time in the midst of a family project - painting or wallpapering or renovating a kitchen or building a deck.
When I was a little bit older she worked hard to do something just for her - getting her Realtors license. For several years in the mid-90’s I was the first person at every single one of her open houses. One of her first sales was her own house - it wasn’t for sale - but she was willing to go above and beyond for her buyers! The new owners loved how beautifully decorated it was so much that they bought it almost completely furnished.
She was with me one of the first times I was brave enough to talk to my crush. We were, fittingly, buying bedding for yet another room re-do. Later, after I married that crush, she and my Papa represented us when we bought our first house.
And she was one of the first people I showed the outdated, leaking smokers house in a great neighborhood that I wanted to make our home. She was pretty much the only one (besides me) who didn’t think it was a crazy idea. But maybe it was. Maybe every idea is crazy unless you have someone who believes in you. Nani, thank you for always believing in me. You would be so proud of how far we have come. I will miss you always. ❤️
