Today I’m announcing with a heavy heart that Black Sheep Craft Shop will be closing its doors at the end of August. Due to circumstances outside of my control, I’ve made the difficult decision to end my relationship with the building’s ownership and will close the shop.

I’m bad at asking for help, but I do have two genuine requests.

First, I’m requesting not to receive questions about whether I’ve considered relocating or suggestions about potential locations. I’ve evaluated the possibility of relocating and decided not to pursue it further at this time. The truth is, the shop would not have leapt out of my dreams and into reality without this specific space next to my sister’s shop becoming available. It was already a stretch to take this on, and I simply do not have the capacity (emotional or otherwise) to start over in a new location at this time. Maybe someday in a different season of life for me.

Second, what I would love feedback on is what this shop and the community that has developed around it has meant to you. I’ve created a form that I’ll link in my bio. I would be so grateful if you gift me with a memory or photos of finished objects you made from something you purchased at the shop.
For right now, I just want to say thank you.

Opening this shop has been a literal dream come true for me, and the community it has given me has far exceeded any hope I could have had. I’m so sorry and sad to see it end in this way and at this time, but what remains is my commitment to remaining a part of our local fiber art community in my individual capacity. In the meantime, I’m going to savor this summer as a shop owner and always as your friend.

I realize this post is confusing. Kayli is not the cat in this photo (Lucy chose the photo for this post)! Rather, she is the fantastic and she has kindly given me (and Lucy) the weekend off from shop duties! I'm beyond grateful.

The cat, by the way, is Peau. He's a stray southern gentleman who adopted Lucy's dad back in Alabama and has been part of the family ever since.

This one year as a small business owner/commercial tenant has shown me even more examples of the rigged system we live in, and the way too many of our "representatives" actively work against public good. In this case, years of attacks at the state and federal level (including the state legislature passing limits on what property taxes cities can charge to support services) are combining with city leaders that seem to prioritize policing and sweetheart deals with their rich developer friends who aren't even being held accountable for their promises failing to deliver.

The most vulnerable suffer. And more are vulnerable right now. Libraries provide resources and education, as well as relief. They are cooling centers during increasingly frequent extreme heat. They provide warmth without obligation during the coldest of days. They provide jobs and joy and are crown jewels of the neighborhoods they serve.

The city and its financial stability have been intentionally knee-capped by the radical right-wing republicans in the state legislature, but those of us who live here should have a voice in what the city chooses to prioritize as it makes difficult cuts. We showed up for our schools, and need to do it for our libraries, too.
