Can AI help you design?
Absolutely. Can it give you inspiration and help you visualize possibilities?
Absolutely. But a picture on a screen and a real house are very different things.
A real project has dimensions, construction conditions, materials, trades and actual people living in it. Use AI. I do. Just understand where the tool stops and the real design work begins.

Before you rip out an entire kitchen, stop and look at what is actually there.
Are the cabinet boxes good? Does the layout work? Could part of it be refinished? Would changing a few strategic things completely shift the room?

I recently talked with The Spruce about wood kitchens and why replacing everything is not automatically the best design decision.
Sometimes good design is knowing what deserves to stay.

I am so tired of seeing design projects done backwards.
If you’re building or remodeling based on allowances, that’s exactly what you’re doing.
An allowance is a number. It isn’t a design. It isn’t a specific light fixture, wallpaper, tile, countertop or plumbing fixture.
So how are you supposed to know where you want to spend your money?
Maybe that wallpaper is absolutely worth the splurge to you. Maybe you’d rather give it up to get the light fixture you fell in love with.
You can’t make those decisions intelligently until you can see the whole design.
Design first. Price the actual design. Then refine it to fit the budget.
That gives you control over where your money goes instead of designing your home around arbitrary numbers.

Pinterest can give you ideas.
Instagram can give you inspiration.
But neither one knows how you live.
That’s where design gets lost sometimes. We save the kitchen. Screenshot the bathroom. Order the chair. Copy the paint color.
Then we put all of those beautiful ideas together and wonder why the house still doesn’t feel quite right.
