Every family has a story. As we look ahead to Juneteenth —Freedom Day — we reflect on the stories that connect families across generations.

The Vesey family’s first known ancestor was brought from St. Thomas to the United States as an enslaved boy through a port in Charleston, South Carolina.

Like many families, our story is one of resilience, migration, perseverance, and hope.

These histories are not only about the past — they help shape who we are today.

On Friday, June 19, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, we invite you to join us at Vesey Lane Goods for a Community Story Hour. Share your family heritage story, a cultural tradition, or a memory that has been passed down through generations. All are welcome.

By sharing our stories, we preserve history, strengthen community, and honor the voices and people who came before us.

This past Sunday, we hosted an upholstery workshop with Nicole Crowder of Nicole Crowder Upholstery.

It was a beautiful day of hands-on upholstery work, learning, and connection as participants brought new life to well-loved pieces.

We’re grateful to Nicole for sharing her craft with us, and we encourage you to further explore her work and other upcoming workshops online at https://www.nicolecrowderupholstery.com/.

Vesey Lane Goods is a creative and cultural destination in East Village Detroit — where experiences rooted in heritage, culture, and craft come together.

You can also book our space for intimate workshops, private events, and gatherings.

The chairs and ottomans were transformed today, but so was the room — through creativity, conversation, and community.

Today, we were excited to welcome women from near and far — including Ohio, Atlanta, Detroit, and Ann Arbor — for an unforgettable upholstery workshop.

Together, we transformed chairs and ottomans, learned new skills, shared stories, and experienced the joy that comes from using our creative genius to redesign furniture with our hands.

Thank you to every participant who invested their time, energy, and creativity into this experience.

A heartfelt thank you to our workshop instructor, Nicole Crowder , for generously sharing her expertise and inspiring us to see new possibilities in the pieces we reimagined.
