Detroit's Renaissance Center opened in 1977, designed by hotel architectural legend John Portman. The 73-story hotel (Detroit's tallest building) included Portman's signature element, a soaring atrium incorporating restaurants, cocktail lounges, fountains, and futuristic interior views of the concrete "city within a city." Happy World Opera Day!

As our founder, Dr. David DiChiera, wrote: “The world of opera is a varied and exciting one. There are such new vistas to explore beyond the ten or fifteen traditional operas which are repeated year after year. We in America have so little opportunity to experience even the tiniest part of the vast heritage this art form has to offer. For me, producing not only popular works but unknown masterpieces as well will always be a rewarding challenge.”

World Opera Day is celebrated on 25 October, the birthday of Georges Bizet and Johann Strauss II, composers of possibly the world’s most famous opera and operetta. It is a day when opera companies, along with artists, opera lovers and opera professionals may show and celebrate the value of the art form.
