Teach young cooks where barbecue comes from.

Teach them the regions, traditions, stories, respect, and people who helped build this craft. The future is stronger when it understands the past. Young cooks need more than recipes. They need to know the stories behind the smoke.

What BBQ tradition should never be forgotten?

Teaching young cooks about tools is part of teaching them respect for the craft.

Thermometers, tongs, gloves, cutting boards, knives, charcoal, wood, and seasonings all have a purpose. The goal is not just to hand them a tool. The goal is to teach them how to use it safely, why it matters, and when to ask for help.

What tool should every young cook learn to use safely?

Every BBQ event should be thinking about the next generation.

A youth contest, a demo, a mentor moment, a judging lesson, or a simple invitation to help can make a lasting difference. Young cooks do not just need a place to compete. They need a place to belong, learn, ask questions, and be encouraged.

Event organizers, how are you including young cooks?

Future of Q Summer Challenge Week 2: Teach a young cook one seasoning lesson.

What does salt do? Why do rubs matter? How much is too much? What flavors work together? How do you taste and adjust? A young cook does not have to learn everything in one day. One lesson at a time builds skill, confidence, and pride.

Share your best beginner seasoning tip.

The next generation learns from what we celebrate. Let’s celebrate effort, kindness, teamwork, respect, practice, and growth just as much as trophies.

This is a good reminder that barbecue is more than food. It is business, service, leadership, community, and connection.

Share one non-trophy win for a young cook.
