Durham Garden Center We’re home to a healthy selection of houseplants, local artisan pottery, native plants, garden centerpieces, seeds, soil, and supplies.

Durham-owned, horticulture for all. You are welcome here 🌈 esp. kids, dogs, and pollinators. As of 2020, we are renovating the space and rethinking how our center can learn and grow with our Durham community. Our staff is new to the shop, but we are no spring bunnies. We are trained horticulturists, artists, foragers, cooks, community planners, and propagation specialists. We hope you love the new look as much as we do! Are you a local artist looking for a bustling space to sell your plant-related work? Email us at [email protected]

Wondering what needs a clip now and what can wait? ✂️ We’re happy to help! In general, late October is for clean up rather than shaping. Save your structural pruning for late winter and wait to clip shrubs that bloom on new wood!

Ever wonder where fall colors come from? Plot twist: the yellow and orange are actually there all along! All summer, the leaves are packed with chlorophyll and there’s so much of it that it hides everything else. But as days get shorter and nights get cooler, trees stop making chlorophyll and the hidden pigments (carotenoids- the same family of pigments that make a carrot orange!) finally shine through. So it’s not a new color after all! 🍁

Fall restock is pouring in and we need space for more trees! While the leaves are dropping above, the roots are doing major work below. Cooler air and warm soil mean less stress on new trees and a massive head start for spring. Fall is the time for planting trees people! Grab a shovel and let’s grow 🪾

Groundcovers planted in fall spend the winter building a root system underground, so when spring arrives, they’re not starting from scratch but are already established and ready to spread, fill in, and bloom faster than anything planted fresh in spring. Don’t miss out on an amazing selection of groundcovers to plant this fall. These options are fast spreading and love shade, help with erosion control and w**d suppression!

Did you know that the oldest living rose bush in Germany is estimated to be 1,000 years old? Or that Rose hips (the round fruit left behind after a rose blooms) are packed with vitamin C? Or that in 1986, President Ronald Reagan officially declared the rose as the national floral emblem of the United States? We LOVE roses here and are so excited to be getting weekly deliveries from Witherspoon Rose Culture | Roses, Care, & Garden Expertise. Support local!
