I’ve had a lot of people tell me in person, “Post the finished photos! I can’t wait any longer!” I know! I’m not holding the photos hostage y’all- just waiting for my fabulous photographer to complete her edits, and great work takes time!

Meanwhile… I am having fun recapping and telling the story of this house to keep us all entertained until the final photo drop.

The renovation at The Granger Project was never short on discoveries and stories. I am unpacking a few in this post:

A foot stone unearthed: During dirt work, this foot stone came tumbling out of the ground. We were sure we had uncovered something wild, but after contacting the owner, we learned we had not disturbed a grave. Carl M. Smith built the home in 1941 with architect Jerome Pillow. Carl passed unexpectedly in 1947. He was buried in his home state of Michigan in a family plot with this foot stone. When his wife, Mildred, passed away, she had Carl moved back to Tennessee. They now lay at rest together under a joint headstone. The family wasn’t sure what on earth to do with the unused foot stone… so it was placed in the backyard near the pool. 🤷‍♀️ If you know the sisters who lived here, you know that’s a fitting choice! Truly one of my favorite stories on this journey!

Swipe to see where The Granger Project actually started. 👀

We always knew she had good bones, but “good bones” is doing some heavy lifting in these photos. Three generations of life happened in this house, the kitchen and bath hadn’t been updated in decades, and the vinyl siding hid the house’s actual face for who knows how long.

So we started peeling things back. Literally. Once the vinyl came off, the original wood siding was right there underneath, and honestly it was one of the most satisfying moments of this whole process. Swipe to the end to see what we saw once the vinyl came down. It was a huge risk- we had no way of knowing if the old cedar would be salvageable… but it was more than that. Solid as the day it was built, but in need of a fresh paint job.

As for the rest of the house, we tackled each room one by one. Slowly demoing out what we couldn’t save, and making plans for what it would become. The blue countertops and blue & white checkered floor in the kitchen, along with the blue tile in the bath, stayed with me throughout the design process. Stay tuned for the full reveal to see how I carried this color into the home’s next chapter.

It’s hard to believe we’re finally here. Three years ago, Jared and I took on The Granger Project, a 1942 home in Lattawoods that had been loved hard by one family for generations.

Her bones were good, but she needed someone to be patient, and take the time and care a home like this deserves. Carl M. Smith built the house in 1942, he was an executive at Dyersburg Fabrics, and his name is still engraved on the front door knocker. We knew the family, they were our neighbors for several years, and when the two sisters who lived here had to move on, we couldn’t imagine this house going to just anyone.

So we took it on. Slow Saturdays, demo days, paint scraping, basement cleaning, and more patience than we knew we had. Y’all have been with us through all of it… the smoke-stained walls, the framing, the drywall dust, the months of “almost there!”

This week, I’m taking you back to where it all started before I share the full reveal… and trust me, it was worth the wait!

One of the best days at the Granger Project so far!! Stanfield’s Nursery has always held a special place in my heart thanks to our childhood neighbors on Victory Street- Dicky & Nancy. Addie and I spent summer after summer playing with Elizabeth, their granddaughter, either in their backyard or at the nursery. When the nursery passed over to Bill & Susan, I stayed a loyal customer, faithfully buying my Christmas tree there each year, and returning spring after spring to grab Swedish ivy, torenia, and all the ferns. Stanfield’s is an establishment, and I’m so happy they could plant some joy around this old house in Lattawoods. Thank you, Nathan, Andrew, and crew for the amazing work!

I know I’m in year three on this house, but y’all… we are just about there! I promise an update once we have shutters and a clean interior. It’s going to be so good!
