Answer: False… usually.

Most tunneling starts with the first few burns.

If the wax doesn’t melt all the way across the top, the candle often keeps following that same path.

The good news?

It’s usually preventable.

This is probably the candle tip we’ve shared more than any other over the years, and I still love when customers stop by months later to tell us it worked.

How well do you actually know us? 👀

A. John has a seminary degree.
B. Sarah taught English in Iraq.
C. John lived in a camper when we met.

Which one is the lie?

We’re John + Sarah, the family behind Modern Forestry. We started pouring candles more than a decade ago, and somewhere along the way the business grew right alongside our family.

These days there are four kids running around (and another little girl coming this Christmas), a whole lot more candles, a small team we love, wholesale shops around the country, markets on the weekends, homeschool squeezed into the middle—and plenty of stories from the years it took to get here.

Around here, we share the real mix of family + small business + candle making + building something together.

As much as we can, we try not to segregate their experience from ours.

Some days that means hiking.

Some days it means baking bread.

Some days it’s coloring in the office while candles are poured.

We know not every family has that flexibility, and that’s okay.

For us, it’s been a gift to let our kids see the everyday moments that make up our lives.

Anyone else burn candles OUTSIDE?? 😂

Book club was at my sister-in-law’s house this morning, and I walked out to the prettiest little setup on her deck—Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, garden veggies, gorgeous fall weather…and a Modern Forestry candle burning right in the middle of it all. 🍂

And it made me wonder: are we a candle-outside family, or is this unusual behavior? 😂

Because apparently we’ve decided cozy does not stop at the back door.
